Out of nowhere, a new Zelda game was announced during this morning’s Nintendo Direct. We hoped we’d be seeing a return to the chibi toy style that the Link’s Awakening remake used, but we figured it would only return in a remake of the Oracle games. They did one better and gave us something original — and not only that, but something the Zelda series has never done before. In The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, strange rifts are appearing throughout Hyrule and sucking in residents — including Link. That’s right, he’s not in the game beyond the opening cutscene. For the first time, you’re playing as Princess Zelda herself. Keep in mind, we’re not counting Wand of Gamelon here — if you ask Nintendo, that one never happened. There will be some kind of wand, however.Zelda doesn’t fight with a sword — she’s more of a spellcaster. She has been given the Tri Rod: a magical staff that contains the ability to duplicate anything it touches. It sounds

A game with Zelda as the main character? Don't get me wrong, I love playing as Link, but this seems like a weird switch-up. Is Zelda gonna be some all-powerful sorceress now? I'm more interested in a challenge, outsmarting enemies with a sword and shield, not waving a magic wand around

This is a cool twist! It will be interesting to see how they approach puzzles and combat from Zelda's perspective. Maybe this will open the door for more games where you can play as different characters in the Zelda universe. I'd love to see a Sheik game someday!

It's about time Zelda got her own spotlight. We've been saving her for years, but let's be real, the princess has some serious power within her. If Peach can finally get her own game after all this time (and let's face it, most of the time she's getting kidnapped!), then Zelda absolutely deserves the same chance.

Think about it, the whole series is named after her! She's gotta be more than just a damsel in distress. This "Echoes of Wisdom" with the Tri Rod sounds awesome - using her magic and smarts to overcome challenges instead of just waiting around in a castle. Here's to Zelda finally getting the chance to be the hero of her own story!

A Zelda-themed Gold Switch Lite? Shut up and take my money! I don't even care that much about the new game (although playing as Zelda sounds pretty cool), but that limited edition console is gorgeous. Maybe I can convince my friend to get the game and borrow it so I can play with the new Switch
