Oni Press Solicitations July 2024

This July, Oni Press will bring back the 1950s and the 1990s simultaneously. The biggest news item is the resurrection of notorious label EC Comics with the launch of Epitaphs From The Abyss, a new horror anthology in the tradition of the pulp magazines that were so shocking (back then) they resulted in comic books being attacked by Congress and, ultimately, heavily censored for many years. Now, with no Comics Code Authority around to stop them, EC isn’t holding back with four chilling stories from Brian Azzarello, Chris Condon, J. Holtham and Stephanie Phillips. And that’s just the beginning! The first issue of Epitaphs From The Abyss goes on sale July 24. In the same month Oni will be bringing back the Biker Mice From Mars! It’s the latest comic from the Nacelleverse (which, as mentioned in previous solicitations, is a new line of comics centered on action figure properties). This new story brings the Mice back home for an origin adventure about their initial conflict with the evil Plutarkians,

This is amazing! EC Comics is back? Sign me up for Epitaphs From The Abyss immediately. I love horror that pushes boundaries, and the lack of Comics Code Authority means they can go all-out wild. I can't wait to see what nightmares Brian Azzarello and the other creators have cooked up for us.

Biker Mice from Mars? Now that's a blast from the past! I used to love that cartoon as a kid. This new comic brings back so many memories. I'm curious to see their origin story and how they'll translate the wacky action from the show to the page. Plus, a new animated series? Now that's something to get excited about!

Cult of the Lamb getting a comic book series? That's unexpected but interesting. I loved the game, and I'm curious to see how they'll expand on the story and characters. Plus, Troy Little on art? That's a win for me.I'll probably wait for the Rick and Morty (2023) Vol 2 trade paperback to come out. I like to binge-read comics, and single issues can get expensive. Plus, I can avoid potential spoilers this way. The Space Shake Saga sounds like a wild ride though.

From horror revivals to classic cartoon reboots and quirky indie gems, there's a comic book here for all ages and interests. The Tea Dragon Festival Treasury Edition sounds particularly charming, perfect for a relaxed afternoon read.

Oni Press is quietly killing it with creator-owned titles! Look at Faceless and the Family – Matt Lesniewski's warped world-building captured my imagination with Mind MGMT Bootleg. This new series sounds like a mind-bending exploration of identity and redemption. Plus, an Eisner nomination speaks volumes! These are the kinds of bold, visionary stories that wouldn't get a chance at the big publishers. Oni Press is a champion for such voices, and I'm excited to see what Faceless has in store.

Single issues can get pricey, especially those special editions. I'll definitely be waiting for the Rick and Morty (2023) Vol 2 trade paperback. That way, I get a whole story arc for a fraction of the cost. Plus, it gives me time to read through my backlog first. In the meantime, I might check out Boulet's Notes: Back in Time at the library. Award-winning comics at no cost? Now that's something I can get behind!
