A Review of the 3 Korean Films in the Vengeance Trilogy

Per IMDb, “the Vengeance Trilogy is a series of three Korean films: (1) Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002), (2) Oldboy (2003), and (3) Lady Vengeance (2005), directed by South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. Each movie deals with themes of revenge, violence, and salvation.” (Because the movies contained so much graphic violence, my conscience would not let me rate them higher than 8 out of 10 stars. Nevertheless, these movies fall into the column on my watch list labeled “movie gems” that are “Old But Gold”.) ♦ (1) Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) A viewer may want to have sympathy for the main character Ryu. The twist of oldboy is disgusting, He found out his love interest was his missing daughter. The Villain set him up because when he was young he caught his classmate having sex with his sister, leading to the sister committing suicide. So The villain set him up to end up in incestious relationship too. There is a thing called Genetic attraction, When 2 estranged family members meet again after not growing together, incestious attraction develops.

"Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance" is a cruel and uncompromising film, but it's the social critique that really spoke to me.
