Hazimation, a small LA-based animation studio, has officially launched their biggest project, a fully animated CG movie called Max Beyond, on digital platforms. Max, a small boy, has been held captive in a research facility for years due to his ability to open rifts to other dimensions. Those who hold him prisoner want to exploit this power, but Max has a plan to escape…if he can just reach his older brother. Leon is planning to break in and bust him out, but Max doesn’t think this is a good idea — he can’t find an outcome where this doesn’t result in Leon’s death. Can Max and Leon save each other? That may require a different approach. “When Max discovers his captors are using his power against him, he realizes he must stop focusing on how the story ends and rewrite the story from the beginning,” reads the description. Where will their journey ultimately take them? Max Beyond was directed, co-written and co-produced by Hasraf ‘HaZ’ Dulull (Disney’s Fast Layne, indie

A scrappy underdog animation studio tackling a high-concept sci-fi story with interdimensional travel? Sign me up! Plus, the fact that the protagonist is using his powers strategically instead of just relying on brute force is intriguing. Here's hoping they can outsmart their captors and rewrite the narrative! And a 2025 video game? Now that's what I call commitment to a universe. Gotta check out the trailer when it drops.

"Rewrite the story from the beginning" - that line is what grabs me. It suggests a narrative that's more than just a straight-up escape attempt. Is there a time travel element? Does Max have to alter his past to change his present circumstances? The synopsis hints at a complex relationship between the brothers, which could be an interesting layer. I'm curious to see how the filmmakers explore these themes.

So cool to see a local LA studio getting their big break. I'll definitely be renting Max Beyond on demand this weekend to show my support. Even if the animation isn't on par with the big studios, I love the underdog spirit.
