Between the time I wrote the last Stranger Things post and now, two gigantic articles were published online that go into deep depth on the Duffers and the final season of their creation. These articles actually reveal a lot more about the upcoming season than we were expecting. Out of all the yards of verbiage, here are the parts that stood out to us the most:
There’s a plastic dead Barb on the Stranger Things 5 set
A Time reporter specifically mentions running across a mannequin of the dead Barb. “Covered in inky black vines made partly of spray-painted pool noodles, the dummy’s lips purple and slightly agape with a giant bleeding gash on her neck, the fan-favorite character is half buried in the ground.” Just a background Easter egg or part of the story? Given that this season takes place years after the first I’m not sure why Barb’s body wouldn’t have decomposed by now. But if it’s a different dimension, you can invent different rules. Speaking of that…
The Upside Down will be “explained”
Matt told Variety, “We do every last remaining thing we wanted to do with the Demogorgons and Mind Flayer and Vecna and the Upside Down.” Ross added, “Every season would be like, ‘Should we talk about it?’ And we’d go, ‘No, let’s wait.’ And then finally, we’re like, ‘Well, we have to now!’” To be honest I’d be fine with the knowledge that we already have. I wrote no less than two days ago about the danger of explaining too much and how it takes the mystique out of things. I hope that isn’t what happens to the Upside Down.
The radio station from the teasers is the gang’s new HQ
I’m surprised they let this slip. The Time article says “WSQK ‘The Squawk’ 94.5 FM was built to mimic the Art Deco radio station from the Duffers’ hometown.” Production designer Chris Trujillo revealed. “Squawk will serve as the headquarters for the gang as they rebel against the military. This is where the kids are prepping their hijinks.”
The government team from the teasers is called the “Wolf Pack”
Linda Hamilton plays weird-haired Dr. Kay, basically the replacement for Dr. Brenner, and “The Wolf Pack” are what they call her hunting team. They aren’t very good wolves because El is clearly running around free in clips from all four episodes from the first half.
Demo-Vision
They may have taken a cue from the later Alien films and rigged a drone to film some scenes directly from a Demogorgon’s POV. But…how can a Demogorgon SEE? They have no eyes. I’ve always assumed it was some kind of sophisticated alien echolocation that made them aware of their surroundings. If they can somehow just magically see for no explained reason, that’s less interesting.
