Capcom officially announced that Resident Evil 7 is in the works at this week’s Sony Interactive Entertainment E3 Press Conference. With the announcement, Capcom is promising that Resident Evil 7 will be a new course for the franchise, as it will leverage its roots and open the door to a horrifying experience. The game is due out early next year.
What’s the biggest change? The series goes to first-person view, and it will feature a photorealistic style using the new RE Engine. The game is scheduled for a multi-platform release. However, the game is being developed to have PlayStation VR Mode support. It will also be available for Xbox One and Windows PC via Steam and the Windows 10 Store. The game is set to arrive in North America and Europe on January 24, 2017.
The story will continue after the events of Resident Evil 6. The Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour demo was also announced today. This demo will portray events that lead up to the main game and ties it directly into the PlayStation VR KITCHEN tech demo shown at E3 2015. In the teaser demo, players will awaken inside a dilapidated cottage on an ominous plantation mansion, and they have to try and make it out alive.
Capcom is promising this new sequel will embody the elements of survival horror, with a complete refresh of gameplay systems. PlayStation Plus subscribers can already download the standalone teaser demo for PlayStation 4 under Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour, and they will have first access before it is available on other platforms at a later date.
Taking the game into the first-person realm is a bit of a dramatic change for a new, main franchise installment. While this is a continuation, it does appear that Capcom is going a soft reboot route this time around.
The demo will also be on display at E3 2016 for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR this week. You can check out some gameplay footage from the Resident Evil 7 biohazard TAPE-1 “Desolation” video in the player below.
