Dune Part 3 Teased Once More

Warner Bros has a new trailer out for Dune Part 3, but it’s even shorter than the one that came before. At just thirty seconds, there isn’t a lot of new footage, but you do get to see some glimpses of things that didn’t appear the first time around.

When I had to write about the initial teaser, I had to admit I hadn’t seen Part Two. So I assumed Paul talking about being Emperor and married meant Chani was his wife. I have now seen Part Two, and…I guess not. Paul fulfilled his prophecy with the Fremen, and he drank blue worm urine which made him see the future, and what he saw horrified him so much that he resolved to prevent it from ever happening. Then he changed his opinion 180 degrees out of nowhere and charged straight at the events that would lead to the bad future, becoming the new Emperor. And he married for power instead of love, tying the knot with Harkonnen royalty instead of Chani, who was RIGHT IN THE ROOM scowling at him.

Uh….is this supposed to be our good guy? Paul felt like a completely different person in the second half of Part Two than he did in the first half. I guess if it’s part of Herbert’s book then they have to work with it, but still. Why would you root for the main character now? To those who have read all the books…he’s not about to go full Eren Yaeger, is he?

Director Denis Villeneuve, who also directed the first two Dunes, told the press “if the first movie was more of a contemplation, like a boy exploring a new world, and the second one being a war movie, this one is more action-packed and tense. [Paul is] dealing with the consequences of having too much power, and he is trying to figure out how to get out of this cycle of violence,” Villeneuve says. “As an Emperor who can see the future, he’s kind of invincible. But there are people trying to overthrow him.”

Dune Part 3 stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, Robert Pattinson as Scytale, Anya Taylor-Joy as Alia Atreides, Jason Momoa as Hayt, Rebecca Ferguson as Lady Jessica, Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan, and Javier Bardem as Stilgar, and that’s not even the whole list. It’ll be released December 18, the same weekend as Avengers Doomsday — but in an attempt to cheat, there will be several days of “advance screenings” which will be tied to the weekend gross.
