Dragon Quest VIII Now on iOS and Android
To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Square Enix’s popular Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, they’ve decided to release ports of the PS2 classic onto both iOS and Android platforms. The popular PS2 JRPG sold over 3 million copies during its initial release and received praise from nearly every single rating outlet available at the time.
“Following its PlayStation®2 system launch in 2004, DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King saw immense success and became an instant cult classic,” said Noriyoshi Fujimoto, producer of the mobile version of DRAGON QUEST VIII: Journey of the Cursed King. “The game is perfectly suited as a tremendous value for mobile and tablet as a full 60-plus hour console game with an epic tale of friendship, bravery and adventure. We’ve put in extra effort for the controls to be intuitive and easy to play. Its 10th anniversary is the ideal milestone to re-release the game for fans and new players alike.”
To account for the smaller screen and touch phone interface the game has undergone a number of optimizations including:
- A new control interface that allows for both one hand and two hand play within a touch screen
- A reworked combat system allowing for one-tap turn-based battles as well as more complex play. Players can have their character and party move independently during battles or take direct control.
- A new auto-run mode that gives players the option to auto-run through the game’s large environments.
- In order to control the camera within the game players can rotate their screen to pan the camera a full 360 degrees around the game map
The game is available on both the iTunes Store and Google Play Store at the cost of $19.99.
Along with the announcement Square Enix released a new trailer showcasing the mobile version of the game which can be seen here:
