SUMMARY: A woman makes a sacrifice to put her husband through school. He goes to the Unites States to get a Masters Degree and when he returns he has already begun an affair with another woman. The woman he is having an affair with was also supported by her husband. He sacrificed so that she could go to the United States and pursue her educational and career goals. Upon returning to South Korea, the two cheating spouses plan to continue their illicit affair while remaining married. But what if?
In “Desperate Mrs. Seon Ju”, Pi Seon-Ju works as an interior designer in a small neighborhood. Even though they have a young child, she chooses to make the sacrifice to let her husband, Jeon Nam-Jin, attend university in the United States and get his advanced degree in architecture. Why not? Won’t it benefit their family? She takes on the full responsibility of paying for his education and also raising their young daughter. All the while looking forward to the day when he will return home, become an established architect, contribute his fair share to supporting their family, and they will happily ever after.
While Pi Seon-Ju is imagining her future wonderful life, her lawfully wedded husband is making connections with significant people in the industry, securing a position at a prestigious South Korean company for when he comes back home, and having an adulterous affair with Jin Sang-A, the woman who will become the successor of the architecture company that hired him. Well! It wouldn’t make sense for him to have an affair with someone who couldn’t offer him more than what his hard-working wife could offer. Pi Seon-Ju is just a humble interior designer with no wealthy family ties or anything like that. Jin Sang-A’s father owns the company where Jeon Nam-Jin will work and she will inherit the company when he passes away. That’s the future wonderful life Jeon Nam-Jin is imagining.
This isn’t a love triangle. This is an indecent love quadrangle. Jin Sang-A is also married to Kim So-Woo, who is already an architect. They have a young son from their union and like Pi Seon-Ju, he was happy to let his wife go to the United States to pursue her educational and career goals while he stayed behind and cared for their son.
Neither Pi Seon-Ju nor Kim So-Woo were prepared for the betrayal of their spouses. But you know what they say? What don’t kill you, makes you stronger.

None of the lead actors and actresses in this series have had leading roles in other K-dramas. “Desperate Mrs. Seon Ju” struck a chord with me because I had real-life dear friends who went through this type of experience. They supported their spouses and helped them get a college degree. Their spouses left them for as soon as they got their degree and got a job where they could support themselves and married someone that they were having an affair with while they were married.
Both of my friends had children from their union and both picked up the pieces and moved on. All I can say to those who have been betrayed in this manner is let those lowlife jerks leave. Who needs flaky people like that in their life? News Flash! The kids don’t need them either! They chose the adulterer over their children. Some folks want to have their cake and eat it too. Uuuhh … NO!!
