Netflix dropped the first teaser trailer today for the upcoming US film adaptation of Death Note. You can check out the new teaser in the player below. Netflix also confirmed the official release date for the film, which drops on the streaming service in August.
The upcoming film is based on the Japanese manga of the same name by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The story follows a high school student who finds a supernatural book and realizes that the owner who writes someone’s name in it while picturing their face will cause that person to die. Intoxicated with his new abilities, the young man begins to kill those he thinks are unworthy of life.
It should be interesting to see how the property translates into a format aimed specifically at western audiences. Specifically, one wonders how much Ryuk will be integrated into the film and how much the audience will actually see of him, along with any of the other Shinigami or “Death Gods.”
The upcoming film is directed by Adam Wingard and stars Nat Wolff, Margaret Qualley, Lakeith Stanfield, Paul Nakauchi, Shea Whigham, and Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. Death Note will premiere exclusively on Netflix’s streaming service on August 25.
