On August 13, Ryan Reynolds will finally star in Free Guy, a comedy that was meant to debut over a year ago but got hit with repeated delays due to the pandemic and the lack of theaters to play it in. All traditional promotion for this movie was released ages ago, so how will they spark up interest once more? Simple…Reynolds happens to know a fourth-wall breaking hero with irreverence as a superpower. (Have they ever appeared in the same room? Hmm…)
In this newly released promo, Deadpool sits down on a couch with Korg from Thor: Ragnarok for a Free Guy trailer reaction video. Some are wondering if this counts as Deadpool’s official introduction into the proper, non-mutant, Disney-umbrella Marvel Cinematic Universe. The answer to that is up in the air. The bigger question is…out of all the MCU characters, why Korg? And we DO have an answer for that…it’s because Taiki Waititi directed Thor: Ragnarok, voices Korg, AND plays the villain of Free Guy. This fact allows Deadpool to make a couple of winking asides at Waititi’s expense.
Free Guy is about Reynold’s character discovering that he is an NPC in a video game, and all the existential dilemmas that arise from that. Is he truly alive? Can he kill himself? Can he fall in love? The movie is pure comedy and won’t dive into it THAT deep, but it’s all through the trailer. Deadpool is all too ready to point out some of the logical flaws.
It’s really nice to see Deadpool again, and it would be even nicer to have a Deadpool 3 at some point. Until then, you can see Ryan Reynolds in Free Guy August 11 (theaters only).
