Dead Boy Detectives Double-Dead: Netflix Cancels Series

I didn’t really know what to expect from Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives at first, but I ended up liking the eight episodes they gave me quite a lot. Sadly that is all they’ll ever give me. The channel that taketh and giveth away just gave another one away. Instead they’re looking into producing more episodes of One Tree Hill, something I don’t want at all.

This show had a weird development cycle: it was teased on an episode of Doom Patrol with a completely different cast and feel. The show was announced a month or two later for Max, suggesting it was a Doom Patrol spinoff. Then Max said they were giving the show to Netflix, around the same time the WB-produced The Sandman appeared there. We’re still not sure if this was ever intended to be connected to Doom Patrol, but it became a Sandman spinoff at that point, sharing the character of Death.

Charles Rowland and Edward Paine are dead boys who are also detectives. They perished decades apart, but after they met up as ghosts, thought “hey, we should be friends and possibly solve mysteries.” But how do you solve murders when you’re dead yourself? They find a conduit in Crystal Palace, a medium with a neat name who has the ability to see the boys and help them chase down crimes of the supernatural variety.

The boys are played by George Rexstrew and Jayden Revri, and Kassius Nelson plays Crystal. Other cast members include Briana Cuoco (The Flight Attendant) as Jenny the Butcher, Ruth Connell (Supernatural) as the Night Nurse, Yuyu Kitamura (The Expatriates) as Niko, and Jenn Lyon (Claws) as Esther the witch, along with Lukas Gage (YOU) and David Iacono (The Flight Attendant) as unnamed characters.

This show managed to endear its cast to the audience pretty well — not an easy task when your time is so short. I never thought we’d see the butcher character for longer than one episode, let alone get an entire arc fleshing her out. If you haven’t seen Dead Boy Detectives, I still think watching the show is worth it, even if you’ll have to deal with the pain of never having any more of it.

This show would have got a complete run if Warner Brothers didnt make the stupid decision of buying discovery. It would have thrived in a pre-discovery merger CW

Man, that's a bummer about Dead Boy Detectives getting canceled! I was really digging that show. It was like a spooky mystery with a touch of humor. I loved the dynamic between the two dead boys and Crystal. I'm really bummed that we won't get to see more of them.

It's a bit of a pattern, isn't it? Supernatural LGBTQ+ content seems to struggle on Netflix. There's definitely a market for LGBTQ+ stories, but maybe the fantasy setting isn't the most popular. We've seen the same thing happen with Warrior Nun, Half Bad, and First Blood. It's almost like the anti-woke crowd has a strong influence on what gets renewed.

The most successful LGBTQ+ Netflix shows are often grounded in reality and tend to lean towards a female audience.

I'm not entirely surprised that Dead Boy Detectives got canceled. While it was a unique show, it wasn't exactly a ratings blockbuster. It's a shame, as it had a lot of potential.

I think the fact that the Doom Patrol actors didn't reprise their roles in Dead Boy Detectives was definitely a factor in its cancellation. I mean, the show was essentially a spin-off of Doom Patrol, so it made sense to keep the original cast. The characters were so well-loved and their chemistry was undeniable. I think a lot of fans were hoping to see them back together again, and when they didn't, it probably turned some people off.

It's a shame, because I really enjoyed Dead Boy Detectives. The show had a unique and quirky tone, and I thought the characters were really well-developed. But I can see why the lack of familiar faces might have hurt its chances of success. It's a reminder that sometimes, even a great show can struggle if it doesn't have the right elements in place.

You know, I've learned my lesson. These days, I usually wait for an American show to get at least three seasons before I dive in. That way, if it gets canceled, I'm not as heartbroken. It's a little less risky, but it also means I miss out on those early discoveries.

Man, this sucks! I was really into Dead Boy Detectives. It was such a cool show, and I was hoping for more. It's a bummer that streaming services keep canceling shows after just one season, especially when they're good ones. It feels like there's nothing to watch anymore.

Hey guys, don't worry about Dead Boy Detectives getting canceled. The story doesn't have to end there! You can actually continue the adventure by reading the comics. That's what I did when Y: The Last Man got canceled. It was a great way to experience more of the story and see how it unfolded. The comics often have additional details and storylines that aren't included in the TV adaptation. Plus, it's a great way to support the creators and keep the story alive. So if you're really into Dead Boy Detectives, I highly recommend checking out the comics. You won't be disappointed!

Dead Boy Detectives deserved better. Swear I never saw any promos for it on Netflix, you basically had to stumble upon it. Netflix is dropping the ball big time lately, canceling all these awesome shows. Seriously considering a Netflix break if they keep renewing stuff like... well, you know, Emily in Paris? Come on, guys! Maybe if we all just chilled on Netflix for a bit they'd get a clue.
