DC Comics Solicitations October 2022

What has DC got in store for October? Apparently, lots and lots of books starring Batman’s villains. It’s truly their month, with several debuting within days of each other. Has Joker taken control of the DC printing facilities? Or is this a side effect of the Discovery merger thing? Is Joker working WITH Discovery? The horror…

In The Riddler: Year One, you can learn how Gotham’s lethal quizmaster came to be — but not THAT one. This is intended as a prequel to The Batman, and follows the Riddler from that movie, Edward Nashton. Six issues will reveal Ed’s backstory, written by Paul Dano and illustrated by Stevan Subic (making his US debut). The first of them goes on sale October 25.

It’s another Bad Day for one of Gotham’s rogues gallery, this time The Penguin. Pengie’s getting upstaged by a former ally, the Umbrella Man — he’s taken over his entire criminal enterprise, and unlike Penguin, he doesn’t operate under “rules.” Batman doesn’t want to help Penguin, but he has to admit Umbrella Man is worse. Read about this uneasy team-up in One Bad Day: The Penguin, a 64-page special to be released October 18.

The Joker gets is own book again in The Joker: The Man Who Stopped Laughing. This time Joker’s fed up with Gotham and taking his crime spree across the United States. Batman’s schtick is centralized to one city, but there are plenty of heroes elsewhere. Which one will have to take on The Joker? DC is keeping that a secret for now. The book goes on sale October 4. In addition, Joker’s Harley replacement, Punchline, is also getting a six-issue story that hits the streets October 25 — if anyone cares about Punchline.

There’s plenty of ACTUAL Harley, though, because of course there is. The best news is that another book based on the Harley Quinn animated series is coming out. This one picks up where the end of Season 3 left off — which means THE DESCRIPTION IS A GIANT SPOILER and should not be looked at by anyone yet. We won’t be repeating it up here. Harley Quinn Season 3 comes to HBO Max next week; Harley Quinn The Animated Series: Legion Of Bats releases its first issue October 18, the first of six.

We can’t get out of here without revealing just one Halloween book, can we? There isn’t as much as there was last year but there IS Terrors Through Time, an anthology book by multiple writers that tells scary stories from the DCU’s past, present and future. It comes out October 11.
