There’s a new Batman anime series coming. A new Batmanime. However, Batman himself is not the star.
Suicide Squad Isekai is a new joint production between Warner Bros. Japan and WIT Studio. It was revealed this morning during a panel at Anime Expo 2023. This time, Joker and Harley Quinn lead the show, but they’re going someplace they’ve never gone before. Dragons! Pig men! What’s going on here? They don’t know, but it looks like a good place to cause some chaos. Harley readies her mallet.
Isekai, the Japanese term for a story where someone falls into a completely different world (usually a fantastical one) and must learn to adapt, has become its own genre of anime recently. Technically, the previous Batman anime production we saw WB shepherd (Batman Ninja) was an isekai, as it saw Bruce Wayne and his enemies transported into Japan’s past.
As for what the actual Suicide Squad has to do with this situation…we originally assumed nothing, but we do see a brief shot of Amanda Waller before the title hits. Perhaps she is the one who sent them into this world…or perhaps they were on a different mission, stumbled into this one, and thought “heck, why not, puddin’.” Either way, Waller doesn’t look pleased.
But don’t expect the villains you’re familiar with. “Everybody has their favorite version of Joker,” says Eri Osada, director of the series (but more famous for Jujutsu Kaisen). “We ultimately decided to not copy any particular iteration and have something completely unique.”
There is no word on when Suicide Squad Isekai could be released. We’ll let you know.
