Cyberpunk Game Courier Launches On Kickstarter

Let’s start the new year off with something from an old year — the Nintendo Entertainment System. Courier is a brand-new game for the 8-bit console, homebrewed to perfection by Kevin Hanley (whose past credits include other NES games like NESCAPE). The crowdfunding campaign to produce physical copies went live this morning.

You are what they call a “data courier” in the future, in a cybernetic city where they’re hunting you down. You have no idea why, as you just woke up with no memory of who you really are. But you still have your hacking skills, which you must use to bust out of the building you’re initially trapped in and find out what’s really going on.

In this adventure game you take on jobs, steal from unscrupulous enemies, hack a lot of devices and upgrade your gear to get into tigher-security areas. Play long enough and you’ll find out the truth about everything. The cart version has a save function that’ll let you pick up where you left off.

Courier can be yours to play for as little as $10, if you want the digital version. Physical copies take a $60 pledge and include the cart, manual and box. A $100 collector’s edition, exclusive to the campaign, throws in a translucent green cartridge and even a physical edition of the digital ROM (it’s a USB drive in a custom shell with designs from the game).

You’ve got one month to collect Courier for the NES, or the mission will fail. The campaign ends January 31!

The premise of Courier has my attentionβ€”waking up with no memory, cybernetic city, and a quest for the truth. It sounds like a narrative-driven adventure, and I'm all for it. The $60 pledge for a physical copy with a manual and box is a reasonable investment for what seems like an immersive gaming experience.

The concept is intriguing, but I've been burned by crowdfunding before. One month to hit that goal seems tight. I'll keep an eye on the campaign and maybe jump in later. Anyone else cautious about Kickstarter projects? An NES game launching on Kickstarter in 2024? Kevin Hanley's dedication to the 8-bit era is commendable. I'm curious about the technical aspectsβ€”how he's pushing the limits of the old hardware. Excited to see how Courier performs on a classic console!
