CW’s Batwoman Just Lost Its Lead Actress — Ruby Rose Quits
Lats Sunday, The CW aired what will be its last episode of Batwoman for a while until it can figure out how to shoot this series under pandemic conditions. The main plot was archenemy Alice on the trail of a Kryptonite bullet that could penetrate Batwoman’s armor, so she could kill her. …Maybe she succeeded?
Lead actress Ruby Rose dropped a bomb this afternoon when she released a public statement announcing her immediate departure from the Batwoman series. The character she plays is…Batwoman.
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season,” Rose says. “This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”
Decisions like this aren’t made without a reason, and we simply don’t know what it is yet. Nothing in her boilerplate response hints at any conflict behind the scenes. But it means that on top of everything else, this show has to recast its Batwoman before it can move forward. Berlanti Priductions has stated they will fill the role with another LBTGQ actress.
Under the cape and cowl, the citizens of Gotham may not notice a difference. But the close and personal friends of Kate Kane definitely will. We can hear the opening dialogue already:
LUKE: “There’s something….different about you today.”
KATE: “What do you mean?”
LUKE: “……What happened to your tattoos?”
