Clash Of Clans Comes To Tabletop With Epic Raid

A mobile game remade as a tabletop game? Is that possible? It may not be for Candy Crush, but the strategic mechanics of Clash of Clans translate a little better. The hit phone game is coming to TTRPG form as Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid, and the crowdfunding campaign launches sometime in the next few weeks.

Franchise owners Supercell have enlisted developer Maestro Media to handle the transition, and Maestro in turn has hired game designers Eric M. Lang (Marvel: United, Star Wars: The Card Game, XCOM: The Board Game, Blood Rage) and Ken Gruhl (Life in Reterra, Mantis, Happy Salmon) to bring it to life. Gameplay elements haven’t been fully revealed, but they will basically be the same as in the electronic original: to build defenses, deploy units, and raid friends’ bases.

“Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid is a groundbreaking experience that brings the beloved universe to life like never before,” boasts Javon Frazier, Founder and CEO of Maestro Media. “With the genius of legendary designers Eric Lang and Ken Gruhl and our incredible partnership with Supercell, we’ve crafted a game that will surprise and delight and will be a must-have tabletop adventure that captures the heart of Clash of Clans.”

Andrea Fasulo, Head of Global Licensing, adds, “We’ve always been passionate about creating memorable experiences for our players, and Clash of Clans: The Epic Raid is an exciting new chapter in that journey. Partnering with Maestro Media allows us to bring the strategy and excitement of Clash of Clans to life in a whole new way.”

I’ve been playing Clash of Clans for years, and the idea of turning it into a tabletop game actually makes sense to me. The original game already has a turn-based logic in how we plan our attacks and defenses, so it won’t feel forced. I’m especially excited to hear that Eric Lang is working on it. His work on Blood Rage and XCOM is impressive, so I believe he can keep the game challenging and strategic. If the tabletop version keeps the balance between building and raiding, I’ll definitely back it. I just hope it includes different troop types and maybe even clan wars. Playing this with friends in person could bring back the feeling of the early mobile game days, but with more social interaction. I want something that isn’t too complicated to set up, but still offers deep gameplay. I’ll wait to see what the Kickstarter shows, but my interest is already high.

I’m not sure this will work. Clash of Clans is fast, mobile, and online. Sitting at a table for hours doing the same thing doesn’t feel the same. I’m not saying it can’t be fun, but I think they need to change a lot for it to be worth it. I’ve seen mobile games turned into board games before, and most of the time they just feel like a weaker version. Unless this version adds something really fresh, I don’t think I’ll support it. It feels more like a way to make money than a real creative move.
