This movie proves it is possible to make a historically accurate period drama with black actors without race swapping historical figures.

Chevalier de Saint-Georges was a title that Joseph Bologne as a mark of merit. He is a prodigy on the violin and a composer and conductor of music, so the name “Jack of all Trades” can be used in its most general sense to describe him. The military did not hesitate in recruiting Joseph because he is also a great fencer. This man from Guadeloupe was the first well-known classical composer of African descent. . Marie Antoinette, the French queen who was known for making controversial decisions, liked this conductor’s work. She attended his performances and concerts. His mother is a slave so him becoming a part of the high society breaks the norm.
During the French Revolution, he sided with the people instead of the French Monarchs who lives a lavish lifestyle while the people suffer. When Napoleon Bonaparte took over France, he tried to delete Chevalier from history. The people from Guadeloupe hide evidences of his existence to make sure it will not happen. Most people are not familiar with this fascinating gentleman. So this movie introduces him to a wider audience.
