Ten years ago, Yacht Club Games released the original Shovel Knight and changed the face of indie games forever. It was the biggest hit the genre ever had and opened the door to dozens of others. Now you can celebrate that anniversary with Scarlet Moon‘s latest cover album, CHAMPIONS: A Tribute to Shovel Knight.
The album features not just ten, not just twenty, but a whopping 42 re-arrangements of Jake “virt” Kaufman’s Shovel Knight’s soundtrack in a wide variety of styles, from bluegrass and classical to rock, funk, EDM and more. The main theme is rendered in bluegrass, “Strike The Earth” is performed as a brass-laden funk, and “Cruise Control” from King of Cards is now a pulsing EDM tune. Also, vocalist Stephània and guest performer insaneintherainmusic lent their pipes to a rendition of the Plague of Shadows vocal track, “ALCHEMY.” And there’s much more than that!
“From the moment I first heard Jake Kaufman’s masterful score for Shovel Knight when I was just 14 years old, I knew it would have a profound impact on my life and musical development,” says album producer Charles Ritz. “I never imagined I’d have the opportunity to direct a tribute album with one of my dearest friends, Alejandro Espinosa, nor that it would become a true passion project involving some of the videogame music community’s finest performers and arrangers.”
“In celebration of a decade of digging, CHAMPIONS presents a thorough and eclectic journey through the full musical universe of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove. After years of work on this album, it is an absolute pleasure to trust Scarlet Moon with its distribution, and we are so excited for the world to listen. Steel thy shovel and enjoy!”
