Captain Planet To Return In Netflix Live-Action Series

If we can agree on one thing, it’s this: the world could sure use a flying green man who makes a lot of puns and takes pollution down to zero about now. Captain Planet and the Planeteers could be coming back, according to a new report from Variety, which suggests the 90s cartoon will be revived as a live-action series.

Prolific TV producer Greg Berlanti is behind the revival, as is — believe it or not — Leonardo DiCaprio. In fact DiCaprio wants to bring back Captain Planet so badly this isn’t the first time he’s tried. A feature film adaption was tinkered with in 2018, scripted by Glen Powell who described it as “subversive and fun and dark and irreverent.” Before that Cartoon Network looked into bringing the hero back, but despite the attached brand, it was another live-action movie (except DiCaprio wasn’t part of it),

The original Captain Planet arrived at the peak of an early 90s wave of pro-environmental media for children, which tapered off by the middle of the decade. I find it weird this stuff tends to come in waves, when the problem it’s meant to address doesn’t really go away. Also, none of those ecological messages we were drowned in seem to have done anything, or at the least, the message did not sink in with the four or five children who saw Captain Planet as kids and grew up to be business CEOs. I can tell you this, though — as a kid I thought Captain Planet was one of the worst shows I’d ever seen; the overall quality of it couldn’t have helped.

But Netflix usually spends big bucks to make its originals look fancy and shiny. If the project sees completion it’ll at least be the best LOOKING Captain Planet series. Tara Hernandez is lead script writer and executive producers include Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman via Berlanti Productions and DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson via Appian Way. We’ll let you know if all these people can manage to summon CP again.

I grew up watching Captain Planet, and while I admit the show felt cheesy even back then, the message stayed with me. It's true that many of us didn't take the environmental lessons seriously, but maybe that wasn’t the show’s fault. Maybe the adults around us didn’t reinforce the message. I think this Netflix version has a chance to reach people in a more direct way, especially if they balance entertainment with realism. I don’t want a lecture, but I want it to matter. Tara Hernandez has done good work in the past, so I feel hopeful. Also, with DiCaprio involved, it’s clear this isn’t just a quick cash grab. I want this to work. The Earth is in worse shape now than when the original show aired, and maybe it takes something bold like this to make people think.

I don’t know. Captain Planet always felt like one of those things people pretend to like for the meme. I get the environmental angle, but I just never found the characters or stories interesting. Maybe Netflix can make it cooler, but turning it into live action? That could go wrong really fast. I'm worried it’s going to look like one of those CW superhero shows, but with climate speeches. Also, I don’t think you can joke around too much with pollution now. It’s a serious topic, and people are tired of greenwashing. So if they’re going to do this, it better feel real and not like some recycled nostalgia.

I believe this is exactly the kind of show we need today. Captain Planet didn’t work for everyone, but the idea behind it was important. We live in a time when the environment is getting worse, and many people feel powerless. A show that gives young viewers hope and teaches them their choices matter can make a difference. I’m also excited that DiCaprio is involved. He’s not just an actor but a real climate advocate. If anyone understands what this project needs, it’s him. I hope the team updates the characters to reflect the world we live in now, and I hope they show solutions, not just problems. If this show inspires even a few people to care more, that’s already a win.

So Netflix is doing Captain Planet now? I guess next we’ll get a gritty reboot of Reading Rainbow. I’m not against the idea, but let’s be honest — this is more for the parents than the kids. The only reason I remember Captain Planet is because the theme song was stuck in my head for years. I hope they skip the mullet this time.

This announcement is interesting, mostly because it says more about Netflix than about Captain Planet. Netflix has been trying to fill its library with IP-based content, and Captain Planet, despite being mocked, is still recognizable. The challenge is tone. The original show was very direct, sometimes awkward, in how it taught lessons. That style won’t work now. But a subversive, slightly darker version, like what Glen Powell once described, might connect with older audiences. I'm curious about Tara Hernandez as the writer. She worked on Mrs. Davis, which was imaginative and weird — maybe that’s what this needs. I don’t think the goal should be realism but rather emotional truth. If they can pull that off, this could be a surprise success.

I think this is lovely news. Captain Planet had a positive message that’s even more needed now than before. I remember watching it with my siblings, and while we made fun of it sometimes, we also learned things. The idea that five kids from different parts of the world could come together to help the planet was beautiful. I hope the new version keeps that global team feeling. Maybe they can also include more up-to-date issues, like climate justice or plastic pollution. I’m really excited to see what they do with the rings and the powers. And yes, it better look good. If Netflix is involved, I want some cool effects!

Another reboot? Great. Because we don’t already have enough reboots. I swear, if I see one more childhood show turned into a “dark live-action version,” I might unplug my TV. This is either going to be surprisingly good or the cringiest thing Netflix has ever made. Captain Planet worked for its time, sort of. I just don’t know if turning it into something modern and serious is possible without it being laughable. They’ll probably cast some young TikTok stars and call it a day.
