Candyman is one of the established horror icons during the 90s. He is also the only prominent horror villain from that era who is African American. He is a vengeful wraith who gets summoned if you mention his name five times at the front of a mirror. The original Candyman have a very tragic story. He was talented painter and a son of a former slave. He fell in love with a white woman during the times where interracial marriage was illegal. People dismembered his hand and poured honey on his body making bees swarm him to death.
One of his hands is a hook, and bees have taken the place of his internal organs. Candyman is a walking beehive.
He can kill you in two ways. He can use his weapon to take out your internal organs, or he can summon his swarm of bees and sting you to death. Unlike other horror movie killers, he doesn’t wear a mask.
Black characters in horror movies always die first, but Jordan Peele changed that. He directed horror films with African American leads like Us and Get Out. Peele was more associated with comedy because he is known as a comedic actor. So People have hesitations when he directed a horror film but his passion project paid off. The critics and audience loved Get out. Now he has one of the biggest horror IPs that is Candyman.
The film is a continuation of the original franchise but is also a reboot because this movie will have a different Candyman. After the original Candyman has perished, a new man will carry the mantle. There was this nice man who gives away candies to the neighborhood children. He got falsely accused of a crime, and the cops killed him. These changes are very timely with the current political climate.
