INQUELING
Written by Hilary J. Bader
Directed by Butch Lukic
Animation by Koko Enterprise Co., Ltd. and Dong Yang
Animation Co., Ltd.
Original airdate: September 30, 2000
My rating: *** (Out of five stars)

Inque has recovered from her last run-in with Batman and is now sabotaging a satellite at the Shimano Space Center. Terry is on his patrol as Batman and is talking to Max on the phone. Bruce is out of town and Terry says that Bruce always thinks that something bad will happen the minute he leaves town. Terry sees an explosion at the space center and says that somehow Bruce is always right. Batman and Inque fight. She succeeds in destroying the satellite and much of the space center before making her getaway. Terry is determined to capture Inque without Bruce’s help.

GOOD POINTS:

Inque is in the story. She is a strong villain. Inque and Batman’s various fight scenes were exciting – though it’s hard to top Inque’s previous attempt to suffocate Batman by pouring herself down his throat in BLACK OUT.

This episode had several different subplots complicating it. Inque suffers genetic injury. Inque’s daughter is introduced and the audience gets some background information on Inque. Max still wants to be more active in Batman’s crime fighting. Dana announces that she has figured out the special nature of Terry’s job. Terry agrees with Dana’s opinion of Terry’s job.

The art was quite good. The fiery explosions at the beginning of the story were very well rendered. Inque’s viscose nature was cleverly drawn, as was her less coalesced state.

BAD POINTS:

While I enjoyed the interactions with Max and Terry, I enjoy interactions with Bruce and Terry even more, and Bruce never appears in this episode.

Viewers have already seen a rich villain, Blight, and his relationship with his son, Paxton Powers. Inque and her daughter, Diana’s relationship seems rather similar. I suppose it’s part of the moral of the story, to illustrate that providing your children with all their physical needs is not enough, but it’s already been done.

KING’S RANSOM
Written by Rich Fogel
Directed by Butch Lukic
Animation by Dong Yang, Koko
Original Airdate: September 17, 2000
Rating: ****1/2 of 5

Description: The Royal Flush gang comes up with a new plan to put them back on the top…but will it work?
Highs: Tells quite a bit about the gang itself, gives Paxton Powers a role, interesting feud story.
Lows: None to speak of, really…the voices for Paxton and Barb were different. That’s it.

Season 3 kicks off with “King’s Ransom”, and…wow! There are plenty of reasons to like this episode, which is a good thing because at the end of season 2 some of the eps simply weren’t up to the standard set before.

First the story is excellent. Much has happened since the last time Batman fought the Royal Flush Gang. Now that Ten has abandoned them, the gang is operating one member short. During a museum heist Bats intervenes and in the ensuing battle Ace is badly damaged (finally, we know he’s a robot), Jack is beaten and arrested, and the King is reduced to selling off the goods to Paxton Powers. The R.F.G. is falling apart, but the King introduces a “trump that cannot fail”…hold Paxton Powers hostage and demand a massive payment.

We find out a lot more as well…Melanie, alias Ten, is now working a low paying restaurant job. She sees the news of Powers’s abduction and freaks out. Terry questions her, and we learn she hasn’t spoken to her family in months. And when she asks about the note she wrote to Terry at the end of “Once Burned”, Terry as Batman simply dismisses the whole issue. That’s pretty cold, but it’s perfect Bat attitude.

Paxton Powers shows off more of himself as well, he has his own secrets to hide. Although not as impressive as his father’s condition, Pax has an illegal collection of artifacts. He’s just as scheming as Derek, and he convinces the King to cooperate with him in a plot to kill Bruce Wayne. There’s still more to this twisting storyline, but I’d rather not spoil it all here…just watch it.

A few more character notes: Bruce is calm and collected when King demands a ransom. He obviously doesn’t care for Paxton, but he knows just how far to deal. Even when Terry gets nervous, it doesn’t shake the elder Bats. We also learn of the former King, who was the father of the current queen. It doesn’t seem as if the present King is quite up the old man’s level, a factor which comes into play later.

The fight scenes are also quite nice. They’re not quite as intense as season 1, but they’re action-packed all the same. There’s no shortage of hard blows and people smashing into other objects. Bruce also gets a fight with the King, where he pulls a neat disappearing act to come out again on top. The R.F.G. Ace almost ends it all, but fortunately Batman has his own “Ace in the Hole”-the dog.

Is there anything wrong with this ep? Well, the voices for Barbara Gordon and Paxton Powers were different. I can’t say that’s a good thing…BG sounds too young for her supposed age, and Paxton’s just whiny now. I guess it can’t all be perfect though.

Amazing. This chronicles the fall of the Royal Flush Gang perfectly, and would be a fitting end to Batman’s conflict with them. Jack and Melanie go straight and old Paxton’s in a bit of a jam…

PP: “Bruce Wayne’s my mentor! He’s like a father to me!”
Barb: “Except he doesn’t glow in the dark.”
PP: “Hey, I resent that! Where’s my lawyer? I’ll sue!”

Do yourself a favor and catch this showing…it sets a standard I would like all season three episodes to meet.

NO MAN’S ISLAND
(the SURVIVOR rip-off…erm…homage)
(by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)

Brought to you by WGBS correspondent, Summer Gleason.

…A WALTZ DOWN MEMORY LANE…

A WORD FROM THE CAST-AWAYS:
Well, we would’ve gotten some quotes from Roxy Rockett and Roland Dagget, but, unfortunately, they were not only eliminated from the game last issue, they were KILLED. All we can tell you is that Dagget died without dignity and Rockett’s last words were “yes…YES…YEESSSSSS!” No, Roxy, we’re far from the climax of our game. Very far from it.

AND WHAT’S HAPPENED SINCE:

A large neon green sinkhole has opened up a few blocks in from the waterfront on the Upper East Side of Gotham near the corner of Adams and O’Neil. Several buildings have imploded. Everyone has quickly evacuated this area, and no one we’ve seen thus far dares to venture in – though one large hulking mass has been seen silhouetted against the ghastly green glow, watching the activity. More as we hear it.

The Ventriloquist and Scarface still hang onto their position of power over the Riddler and Mad Hatter – barely. The newest addition to their group, Firefly, seems to have mellowed the group down some. Maybe they were merely paranoid of being wiped out this early and now feel more secure having someone in their ranks with – excuse the pun – severe firepower. That’ll keep those two brainiacs in check for the time being.

The Scarecrow has mentioned that his group of castaways, now simply known as “Supa-Freakz”, seems to be lessening in numbers over the past week. “Yeah, it’s starting to get lonely around here. I figured hanging out with this clique would’ve been a gas – and, damn it, as much as I love watching Joker and Two-Face continually trying to one-up each other, something’s…missing.” He then remerged into the shadows continued to speak. “You should’ve seen it, yesterday. Y’see, the Clown had to do some calculations for this ‘chemical warfare’ project he’s been working on, but Harv reset his calculator so it only worked in BINARY format. That was sweet – J just FREAKED! God, I love his mood swings. So this morning, to get him back, he face-painted Harv’s face with clown make-up before he woke up. I don’t quite understand what that means, but Harv wasn’t pleased. Oooohhh, this is going to be interesting…”

Harley Quinn was also watching the action, but seemed distraught. “Every night when I roll over in bed, Red’s nowhere to be found. Where is she? She’s here through the day – so where does she keep running off to?” Good point, Harley. Poison Ivy hasn’t been seen after curfew for the past three days.

Still no word on where the dead body of Roland Dagget has been taken to. After seeing what happened to him, no one dares visit Rupert Thorne’s office building – and who can blame them?

Leslie Thompkins has a strong will and a heart of gold. Who else but her could put up with the endless, mindless rantings of the Penguin? He must be the weakest man alive; you’d think that someone who proclaims himself as “dashing” and “daring” and “debonaire” would have more class than to complain about the pain of his gunshot wound over a month after it happened!

Batman has finally made an appearance. I overheard he and Commissioner Gordon having a private conversation through my bedroom window last night; I couldn’t hear any details, but I saw the silhouette. I heard the tone in Gordon’s voice. I knew whom he was talking to. I questioned him this morning about what was going on, but Gordon only said that Batman has acquired a new member to his costumed “Batsquad”, and as long as he doesn’t enter GCPD territory, to let him do as he pleases. Interesting…

Later this morning, I also met Alfred Pennyworth, butler to Wayne Enterprises CEO Bruce Wayne, out in front of Police Headquarters, where I am currently living. We had a lovely chat, but it was obvious that he was in a rush; I wonder where he was going. Why was he heading straight into downtown? That’s where the “Supa-Freakz” are stationed. Gordon insisted that he go alone; won’t he get killed?

And why is Pennyworth here in the first place? Who is going to dress Bruce up every morning back on the mainland? Lucious refused to do so, at least last time Bruce asked…

And as a summary, let’s just go over those we haven’t seen in action yet, aside from the omnipresent Batsquad: Mr. Freeze, Bane, Lock-Up, Clayface, Ra’s Al Ghul, his daughter, the Demon, Zatanna, the Phantasm, and…well, I suppose Catwoman would be in this group now, too.

This is GWBS reporter Summer Gleason, signing off.

* * * * * * * * * *

AND AFTER A THIRD ROUND OF VOTING…

THE GCPD HEADQUARTERS IS UNDER ATTACK!!!! Overnight, Killer Croc and Man-Bat have snuck up on our camp and have been throwing large boulders, mailboxes, and even crunched cars at each and every one of our windows! Man-Bat’s continuously circling the building, with no sign of leaving. Why are they targetting US? Perhaps Croc figured out that I’m stationed here during NO MAN’S ISLAND, and is still a little…miffed about our failed relationship two years back. Where’s Baby-Doll when you need her?

Gordon, Bullock, and Montoya haven’t had time to comment; they’ve had their hands full trying to keep the building standing. Gordon’s ordered Montoya to escort me to a safer district of town – though I don’t know where. I’ve heard Bullock rumbling and mumbling about evicting the building and moving to the Fashion District; that’s a good point. We’d be able to keep a closer eye on the Penguin AND avoid Croc’s barbaric styles of war for the time being.

Speaking of which, word has it that the Penguin is back in action again. His six weeks of bed rest are over, and he’s back in business. How exactly, I’m not sure. He also complained some more about the wacky man with yellow skin harassing him once again. As much as I hate to think it, I’m starting to believe him. Penguin may be sinister, but he’s not crazy. But could he be hallucinating?? “My dear, please. If I were hallucinating, it would definately be about something much more elitist and refined than THAT.” That’s what he said. I don’t know…if it is true, I wouldn’t feel very safe about bunking with Cobblepot until Gordon and his crew get over here.

I mean, honestly, who comes up with these ideas, anyway?

Last night there was an explosion. I ran to the top of the Iceburg Lounge to see if I could see anything and…whoa. Remember the green sinkhole? It was growing, and growing, and GROWING; a large hulking figure was jumping and flipping and fighting hand-to-hand with another figure that had just risen out of the pit…I couldn’t make it out any clearer from here. I saw lots of flashes of multicoloured light, though – coming from his eyes, it looked like. In the morning I cautiously walked the ten blocks to the edge of the pit, and found the body of a yellowish figure in a red and black costume and cape, lying flat on his back with smoke rising from his body. What the hell was THAT? It didn’t even look human…almost demonic. Could this be the Demon that was on the list of SURVIVOR applicants? Dead leaves and vines covered the area, too – funny, considering there wasn’t a park OR tree around for blocks.

So yellow skinned, huh? Was this the guy that was bothering the Penguin?

…evidently, no. On my way back to the Iceburg Lounge, someone grabbed me. “Aha!!!!” he hollered as he burst out from nowhere. I cried out for help, but no one heard me! I just kept screaming, screaming, screaming, but he just clamped his hand over my mouth and said, “the Creeper doesn’t like this, Summer.” He just kept running back downtown, giggling gleefully, telling me about how perfect I was for his plan. Plan? What plan?

About an hour later we arrived out in front of city hall where the Supa-Freakz reside. I didn’t like this one bit. The Joker? Two-Face? The Scarecrow? Poison Ivy? I’ve never run into any of them before, and I don’t intend to now.

“A-HEH-HEH-HEH-HEH-HEM!!!!” the man calling himself the Creeeep-urrrr said gaily. Nothing. “HARRRRRR-LEEEYYYYY!!!!” he yelled out; he was dangling me off the side of the building. “GET OUT HERE! I HAVE A SURPRISE POUR VOUS!!!!” She actually came out in tears – and his presence only enraged her further; oh well, at least if I had to meet one of these freaks, it was the least threatening of the bunch. I kind of dazed in and out of the ensuing conversation, but it was evident that this Creeper guy was trying to woo her with me as the gift. Yeah. That’s great. Like it even makes sense.

BLAM!!!

The Creeper quickly turned around, still clutching me under his arm. Two-Face stood there, a gun in his hand, the Scarecrow at his side for back-up. A bullet-hole was in the roof of the building, smoke rising through the morning air. He spoke quickly and precisely. “Ryder. Gleeson. You’re both equally unwanted here.” Ryder? JACK RYDER? This yellow-skinned wacky-man was my old co-anchor and college buddy JACK RYDER??? “You’ve violated the sanctity of our lair. Drop the girl and don’t move.” He wouldn’t move the gun off of the Creeper; I guess he supposed I’d cooperate. Duh, I will.

“HARLEY!!! Get up here. Bring the canon,” Two-Face said. CANON? Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy climbed up the stairs carrying a large circus-like bazooka and quickly erected it on the roof.

“I told you once, I told you a million times already, freak,” Harley said, still sniffling. What WAS bothering her? And why wasn’t Ivy consoling her? I always thought these two had a “special” bond. “I don’t want you around me ever again. You’ll just get in the way of me and…Mistah…J….” and with that, she just broke down and cried.

“We’ve all heard that the Demon was dead. Ivy reported this to us this morning. So that means we have one more to eliminate.” Two-Face held up his coin and showed it to us. “Heads, Gleeson goes. Tails, Creeper.” And so he flipped; you know, I’ve heard about this being done a million times before, but you never realize just how frightening it really is until it happens to you. The coin landed in his hand and he flipped it over onto his opposite wrist. “Tails. Get that yellow jack-ass out of here.” I watched in horror as the Scarecrow and Poison Ivy grabbed the Creeper, loaded him into the bazooka, and promptly shot him into the sky; he made a loud Goofy- esque “Yahhhh-hoooo-hweeeeee!!!!!” scream as he soared through the noon day air before crashing down on the mainland with a loud thud.

Two-Face then approached me as his band of freaks disbanded. “Let this be a lesson to you, Gleeson. Never enter our territory again. We have enough on our minds as it is at the moment; you’re just canon fodder. Understand? Now you have ten minutes to get ten blocks from here or we’ll hunt you down, too. Ciao.” He escorted Harley back down into city hall and closed the door behind them. “Nothing can cheer me up, Haw-vey,” I heard her say before the door slammed shut, “nuthin’, especially her, especially now. She’s a sucky present.”

Phew, that was close. I didn’t tarry; I quickly scampered down the fire escape and ran as quickly as I could back to the Iceburg Lounge. Sucky present, huh? I’m still confused…supervillain love really confuses me sometimes.

I’ve never come that close to death before. Worse yet, I didn’t even meet the Joker while I was with the Supa-Freakz, so I have no idea where he is. All I want is to be near Gordon again; bunking with the Penguin makes me feel very uneasy.

Other rumblings I’ve caught this week are as follows:

-Killer Croc and Man-Bat are still camped outside of the GCPD headquarters. Apparently they’re not doing anything. They’re just biding their time.
-Apparently Mr. Freeze, in hopes of winning the game, has frozen over the Gotham resevoir so no one can safely drink the water (or lack thereof) from herein. Apparently he doesn’t need water to survive. That’s an interesting idea…but my faucet still works, so I doubt this is true.
-Catwoman killed the Joker, but no body has been found, as always.
-Rupert Thorne has been quite quiet since last week, too. No sign on the dead body of Roland Dagget, too.
-The “lightweights” gang of Ventriloquist, Riddler, Mad Hatter, and Firefly seems to be very silent at the moment.
-Batman and his crew have been appearing more often. I’ve seen Robin and Nightwing have a chat with the Penguin on a few occasions with my bare eyes. No word on what it’s about, though. The Penguin just looks pretty pissed off after they leave each time. That’s gotta be good for me, then.

Anyhow, this is WGBS reporter Summer Gleason, signing off. I’m going to sleep…though I’m still shaking.

LITTLE FACTS AND BLOOPERS
(by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)

Here is a section that just points out various little facts and bloopers that we have noticed while watching BTAS and STAS countless times. If you have anything to contribute, feel free to do so! Enjoy!

CONTRIBUTED BY STAFF:
1) In the BEYOND episode MELTDOWN, watch the scene where Batman, Blight, and Freeze are having their three-way fight. Right after Blight snaps the Bat-rope Batman wraps around him, Batman is shocked back onto a catwalk spanning across the room completely suspended, no walls on either side of it to give it support. However, in the next seen, the catwalk Batman is laying upon runs right alongside a wall. Blooper!

1) LAST WEEK, WE STATED THE FOLLOWING:
There’s an estbalished chemistry between Batgirl/Barbara and Robin/Nightwing/Dick throughout the series. But in “Batgirl Returns”, Barbara’s fantasy shows us that she also has a mighty crush on Batman, but the issue is never brought up again. Hmmm…

THE PHANTOM NUISANCE SAYS: Correct me if i’m wrong but didn’t Barbara and Bruce go on together as ‘lovers’ inbetween TNBA and BB (as stated in A TOUCH OF CURARE).

MERCHANDISING: WHERE THE REAL BAT-CASH IS MADE
(by Bill Curtis)

Well, well, well.

The most talked-about, and sought after current Batman-related item is definately the unreleased, uncut tape of “Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker”.

After originally changing the release date from November 7th to Hallowe’en (October 31st), and then to October 24th, Warner Brothers then did the unthinkable; by announcing it would now not be released until December 12th. The first “official” spin they tried to put on the delay was that they decided to hold it for the more lucrative “holiday” season sales. Cyber sleuths, however, soon deduced WB’s real reason for this delay: caving in to U.S. election year politics, the film was being re-edited to a more “child-friendly” edition. Gone is the darker, harder edge that Paul Dini and Bruce Timm were so proud of. What we’ll be left with is anyone’s guess, but the original vision will be lost, unless WB decides on 2 formats: “kid-friendly” VHS, and maybe a “director’s cut” on DVD. This seems to be the overwhelming choice currently on most sites I’ve seen.

I’m not going to use this column to get into a rant about first amendment rights, freedom of speech, censorship, etc. If there are those of you (and I know there are) who can’t wait for this film, or are afraid of it being butchered beyond recognition, there are plenty of black market copies floating around out there. Be prepared to pay big bucks, however! Word about this has gotten out, and the video pirates are charging $100 and up for copies (we’ve seen over $150 at eBay), and God only knows the condition of the video you’re getting!

My advice is to wait and see what WB releases. If you do seek out these “other” sources: Buyer Beware! NEVER buy a tape without seeing the quality first, and don’t cry if you’re ripped off! ANY tape (or product for that matter) that you buy that is not sold or sanctioned by WB is illegal, and a bootleg.

Okay, disclaimers aside let’s talk merchandise: The big talk around this whole ball of wax was from a boxed set WB sent out to distributors as a “Promotional Item Only”. It consists of a black box with green writing which reads: “Just when you thought Gotham was safe”. When you open the box, a light sensor triggers a sound chip of the Joker laughing. There are three sound bursts of laughter per trigger. Inside the box are a Thunderwhip Batman Beyond figure, a maxi- single CD with music from the soundtrack, and the most important item: a screening copy of the uncut, unedited version of “Return of the Joker.” I’ve seen and heard of this item, but have not been able to get my hands on one yet. Again, a warning: I bid on one of these recently at an on-line auction site, only to be outbid at the last minute. The winner was gracious enough to contact me after the auction, and advised me he’d let me know the quality of the screening video. However, the seller tried to pull a fast one and enclosed a video of the making of the movie, not the movie itself!

Again, the best advice is: if you can’t see what you’re buying, don’t buy! That’s it for now. Keep your fingers crossed, let’s all give WB the benefit of the doubt, that they’ll do the right thing. Until next time: same bat-time, same bat-channel!

COMIC REVIEWS
(BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES by Tim “TWO-FACE” Leighton)
(BATMAN BEYOND by Bill Curtis)
(SUPERMAN ADVENTURES by Dick Grayson)

BATMAN BEYOND
ISSUE: “Commissioner of Fear” (#13)
WRITTEN BY: Hilary J. Bader
PENCILS: Min S. Ku
INKS: Ande Parks
ISSUED: September 27, 2000 (Cover date Nov 2000)
RATING: 9/10

Synopsis: Commissioner Barbara Gordon holds the key to finding a young kidnap victim, but will she be able to overcome the recurring effects of the fear toxin the Scarecrow exposed her to years ago?

Great story, and a great premise! Barbara Gordon still suffers fear trauma every 4-5 years as a result of the Scarecrow’s fear toxin she was exposed to in the now classic BTAS episode “Over the Edge”. All this ties in very nicely and very neatly into a story about a young kidnapping victim the Commissioner and Batman are tracking down.

After nearly dropping an informant (and herself) off a rooftop, Barbara admits to her husband that she is having a problem, but says she must push through it to save the young hostage. Using her police clout, she picks up Terry, and tells him the tale of that fateful night on the rooftop, when she was exposed to Scarecrow’s fear serum, and the “Over the Edge” dream that followed. She then admits to Terry that the terrors happen every 4-5 years, despite Bruce Wayne’s help. Bruce could only offer a treatment, not a cure. After the predictable chase and battle with goons, Barbara is talked through the worst of the terrors by Terry (as Batman). Barbara had it out with the brains behind the kidnapping, and just as he’s about to drop her to her death (he thinks), he taunts her with the location of the missing little girl. Barbara does fall, but is caught by Batman. She tells him where to find the girl before passing out. When she awakens, she is in the Batcave, and is informed that she has been out for about a day and a half. Barbara is impressed that Terry stayed with her the whole time, and makes a startling proclamation. Although Terry will never be the Batman Bruce Wayne was; now he IS Batman.

I loved the fact that they tied this Batman Beyond story in Bruce/Barbara’s past. I think this is an area that is just begging to be covered, both in these stories, and in the animated “Batman Beyond” episodes as well. I’m glad the new “Return of the Joker” movie will show parts of Bruce’s past, in an effort to bridge the gap between Batman, and Batman Beyond.

The artwork was passable; not what we’re used to, but good, nonetheless. At least it seems we’ve done away with those God-awful bugeyes Terry suffers when he’s in the mask! The best artwork, in fact, was the cover: neatly tying “Over the Edge” into this issue’s story.

A solid 9 out of 10, and I can’t wait for more tie-ins!

*RETURN OF THE JOKER NEWS:
-Read Paul Dini’s words on the delaying/cutting of ROTJ by following this link:
http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=7166
-The release date for RETURN OF THE JOKER has been PUSHED BACK to December 12th, 2000. Why? Undoubtedly, this was done with the idea that they’d sell more during the holiday season. Perhaps, but come on…this just isn’t fair, especially after all the work everyone did to bring it out WAY AHEAD of the original planned date (from November 7 to October 24). This allcomes from Stan Berkowitz himself, and the folks at Amazon.com.

(All the previous movie info was taken from Alan J. Porter’s “Gotham Weekly News” newsletter)

*BATMAN BEYOND: LIVE ACTION NEWS:
-Word is leaking out from the UK major record label Distinct’ive that Warners and Paul Dini are apparently very interested in one of their clients to score the upcoming BB live-action film. Who? Mike Truman, Chris Healings, and Lee Mullin – the trio that make up the eletronica group HYBRID who are responsible for the recent critically acclaimed album “Wide Again”. No way to confirm this yet, but will keep an eye on it. Thanks to DARK HORIZONS.
-Director BOAZ YAKIN says this about his take on the BATMAN BEYOND feature: When asked if he can avoid the cliches of previous comic book films, Yakin answered, “Just because the characters are familiar and mainstream doesn’t mean we need to follow a traditional, generic arc with them. Everything I do I hope is really sophisticated, so this will not stop here.”
-YAKIN will also be co-writing the script and making it far more intense and more adult-oriented than ANY of the previous Bat-movies. At least that’s his intention.

*BATMAN: YEAR ONE (BATMAN 5) NEWS:
-Darren Aronofsky talks BATMAN 5:
http://www.salon.com/ent/movies/int/2000/10/13/aronofsky/index2.html
-Frank Miller talks BATMAN 5 over at CINESCAPE:
Frank Miller is talking about his collaboration with Darren Aronofsky on the script for Batman 5, based on Miller’s Batman: Year One comic series. Miller revealed the following: “Darren and I had a lot of fun working together on the Ronin movie project. We make a good team, I think…Darren in particular wanted to make Year One.”
He adds, “I expect to have a lot of fun with Year One. From the get go, I see many things that need changing — but ultimately even if the movie gets made, mine will only be one of many voices calling the shots. I’ll bring my very best efforts to the script. I won’t write a single line I don’t believe in.”
-The Comics2Film newsletter reports that the “Pure Batman5 Rumors website, (http://homes.acmecity.com/batman/arkham/23/) says director Darren Aronofsky may have long-term plans for Batman. While it was recently announced that Aronofsky would direct and co-write Batman: Year One, an unnamed source tells Frosteey that the director is hoping to do a trilogy of movies. The source claims that the cycle will start with Year One and end with The Dark Knight Returns. The source did not know what the second part of the series would be” This is the first we’ve heard of this rumor, however stories have circulated in the past the Aronofsky is keen on doing The Dark Knight Returns.
-Recent reports have stated that Aronofsky might not be as close to doing BATMAN 5 as we originally thought – for he and Miller are working on an adaption of RONIN as well. However now, either don’t know which will go into production first – whichever gets a script completed first is the winner, apparently.
