Ben Affleck is a Perfect Superhero Choice
Having played the role of three DC Comic superheroes, Benjamin Géza Affleck has proven to be the perfect fit for the roles. Born in August 1972, he began his career at age twelve appearing in the PBS educational film The Voyage of the Mimi (1984, 1988).
Affleck became active on the screen mainly in Kevin Smith’s films such as Mallrats (1995) and Chasing Amy (1997). However, he remained mainly unnoticed until his co-work with childhood friend, Matt Damon. They both wrote the screenplay, acted, and directed the film, Goodwill Hunting (1999), for which they won the Golden Globe and Academy Awards for Best Original Screenplay.
In the Spotlight
The awards brought much-needed attention to Affleck, who would go on to appear in many films including the disaster film Armageddon (1998), the war drama Pearl Harbor (2001), and the thrillers The Sum of All Fears and Changing Lanes (both 2002).
In 2003, Marvel Studios invited him to the Daredevil role, where he played the role of a blind vigilante who defends the innocent. The movie was well taken but critics were cautious about the new superhero without special power, having to deal with the existing Batman and his gadgets.
In 2006, Affleck showered in the spotlight again when he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor and a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Hollywoodland.
Playing an unwinding role of success, Affleck received super accolades for two movies in which he directed, co-wrote, and starred The Town (2010) and Argo (2012); he won the Golden Globe and BAFTA Awards for Best Director, and the Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Academy Award for Best Picture.
The DC Comic Superhero
Ben Affleck would shine on the big screen again but this time in a series of superhero movies, starting with the role of Batman, which he played in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Suicide Squad (2016), Justice League (2017) and The Flash (2023). But how well did he fit into the role of Batman? Here are some insights as to what fans believe:
‘What Affleck brought to Bruce Wayne/Batman in this movie was incredibly refreshing and exhilarating’ Movie Web
‘But Ben Affleck. What this buys Warner Bros. is a major added value element, one of the bigger stars of the last fifteen years playing Warner’s most iconic character, with all of the free publicity and audience awareness that comes with that. What this buys Affleck is a lifetime of artistic freedom as a producer and/or director.” Forbes
Ben Affleck has played many roles but his fame as an actor will continue to brighten, and although the fans are not happy to see him leave behind the batman hood, they will still line up to watch him in whatever movie he plays next.
Benjamin Affleck is co-owner along with Matt Damon of the production firm, Pearl Street Films. He is also a co-founder of the grant-providing Eastern Congo Initiative. He is the proud father of three children.
