Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition For Sale At Theaters This Weekend

-

This has proven to be that rare kind of moviegoing summer where taste is winning out over hype. Innovative ideas from fresh young directors are succeeding through word of mouth alone, while Big Brand movies with bazillion-dollar advertising budgets are struggling to rake in the cash like they once did. I would give moviegoers credit, but I’m going to wait until I see what their response is to that unnecessary live-action Moana remake.

A24’s Backrooms is doing well…well enough for the distributor to try to punch its numbers back up with a re-edit. Something they’re calling Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition will replace the original starting Friday. The new cut adds 15 more minutes of footage, but lest you panic and say “I haven’t seen the original version yet!!” don’t worry. The new footage will be shown post-credits.

As for what it is…no one knows. It’s mentioned in the description that director Kane Parsons picked out what we’ll see. Will it reveal anything new about the lore of the Backrooms? Will it hint at upcoming storylines from the confirmed sequel? Or will it be cell phone footage of Parsons’ tulip bed? Hey, it could be anything.

So far, Backrooms has made $185 million in the US and over $330 million worldwide. Its scrappy cousin Obsession has performed even better, still sitting within the box office Top 3 as of last weekend. Now that Backrooms has raised the stakes, maybe Focus Features will hunt around for some unseen outtakes of Inde Navarette going crazy.
