Awesome Games Done Quick 2025 Commences This Sunday

The next Awesome Games Done Quick charity speedrun starts in less than 48 hours! Set your clocks for January 5 at 9 AM because that’s when the fun begins again…the marathon benefits the Prevent Cancer Foundation, with each donation going to the organization 100% (the sponsors AGDQ has are paying for the expenses of running it). Humble Bundle is also stepping in with a special AGDQ bundle that includes seven of this year’s games for just $12 (but you can donate more).

Highlights in the schedule this year include a run of Crazy Taxi with a live band performing the songs from the game, a “2 player, 1 controller” session of Breath of The Wild, a Tool-Assisted Speedrun (TAS) showcase for Super Mario 64 and a randomized version of Ocarina of Time. Other planned runs include Astro Bot, Wind Waker, Tomb Raider (2013), Snake Rattle & Roll on the NES, Final Fantasy Legend II on the Game Boy, UFO 5O (“Various Games Showcase”), Super Meat Boy, Sonic Origins, Yakuza, Shenmue, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin, Batman Forever: The Arcade Game, Tears of the Kingdom (All Dungeons), Lies of P, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Super Mario World, Road Runner’s Death Valley Rally, Elden Ring and many many more.

The always delightful Awful Games Block will return on the night of January 8 and kick things off with the infamous Superman 64, followed by Squirrel With A Gun, Big Rigs. Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon and something called “Golf With Your Grandmother.”

You can watch the full event on the GDQ Twitch channel and YouTube, or on any device that supports one of those two things. AGDQ 2025 takes place at the Wyndham Grand in downtown Pittsburgh from January 5 to 12.

The idea of a live band playing the Crazy Taxi soundtrack during the run is just awesome. It's great to see they're supporting the Prevent Cancer Foundation too, making each donation count directly. I've already marked my calendar for the Breath of the Wild session; watching two players manage one controller is going to be something else. And the Awful Games Block? Superman 64 is a classic for all the wrong reasons, but that's part of the fun. Definitely tuning in this Sunday!

I've seen a few of these AGDQ events before, and honestly, they're starting to feel repetitive. Yes, the charity aspect is commendable, but the novelty of watching someone speedrun games, especially when it's the same ones year after year, wears off. The '2 player, 1 controller' gimmick on Breath of the Wild might be entertaining for some, but it seems more like a desperate attempt to keep viewers engaged. And don't get me started on the Awful Games Block; do we really need to see Superman 64 again? I'll probably skip this year unless they surprise me with something genuinely new.

Randomized Ocarina of Time run sounds like it's going to be interesting, changing up how we see one of the best games ever. And the TAS showcase for Super Mario 64? That's going to be educational as well as fun. It's cool that they're throwing in some lesser-known games like UFO 50 too. Plus, the fact that all donations go directly to cancer prevention is a big win. I'll definitely be watching and might even buy that Humble Bundle to support more.

I don't quite understand the appeal of these speedrunning events. Back in my day, we played games to enjoy them at our own pace, not to rush through them. This AGDQ thing with all these odd combinations like two players on one controller, or playing games only to find out how badly they were made, seems like a waste of time. Sure, the charity part is good, but why not do something more straightforward with the money? And the noise from a live band for Crazy Taxi? It just sounds like chaos to me. I'll pass on this one.

Wow, they're doing so many cool games this year at AGDQ! I love that they play old games like Super Mario World and new ones like Elden Ring. It's so cool they have a band playing music for Crazy Taxi, I want to see that! And the idea of two people playing Breath of the Wild with just one controller sounds really hard but fun to watch. I'm telling all my friends to watch too because we can help with cancer stuff by just watching games.
