During the late 1980s, the World Wrestling Federation had a Superstar whose fame and popularity reached supernova levels… then quickly faded away  He was born James Hellwig, but in reality was a warrior – in fact, he was the Ultimate Warrior.  Fans of a certain age will remember Vince McMahon screaming “THE ULLLLLTIMATE WARRIOR” in his famous growl. Someone whose intensity was reflected in his manic ring entrance – a full-sprint to the ring as crazy rock music flared up. Someone who beat – cleanly – the icon of the WWE during the First Wrestling Boom.  The Ultimate Warrior was one of the few WWE personalities whose popularity would eclipse that of Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage. The most famous WWE performers, or “Superstars” if you will, all have outsized personalities. Sony had the most solid showing of the platform makers at E3. Microsoft focused on the Xbox as media device, while skimping on the game content. Sony, meanwhile, kept its eye on the games, and though the show featured some bewildering missteps, it opened and closed extremely strong. For many, the story of the show was… Ellen Page. Naughty Dog’s highly anticipated The Last of Us is centered around a 14 year old girl named Ellie that bore a distinctive resemblance to the “Juno” actress. Her design was slightly changed before E3, when it was revealed that Heavy Rain developer was behind a new game called Beyond: Two Souls… where you are actually playing as Ellen Page thanks to performance capture (the same as was behind Avatar). I’ll be blunt here; Nintendo’s in trouble. It’s been a hard crash for them. Wii sales fell off of a cliff, and the 3DS has faced challenges in the marketplace. Nintendo had to cut prices far earlier than anticipated, and the company is losing money for the first time ever. But there was a beacon of hope on the horizon, their new console – the Wii U. Wii U’s defining feature is a gamepad with an embedded touchscreen, sort of recreating the DS experience with a console setup. While the touchscreen is the main controller, Wii remotes can be used as well, and the console finally supports HD visuals. Beyond that and a few demos, large questions remained about the WiiU. That would be saved until this year. Nintendo had said beforehand that no price or date would be revealed at E3, but more concrete details on the system itself, and the exciting new games for the console, would be there.
