Add “My Holo Love” to your watch list if interested in watching a Korean drama series that features an AI humanoid. This Kdrama was released in 2020; has 12 episodes; and is streaming on Netflix.
Tech news is buzzing about AI (artificial intelligence); especially AI humanoids. People are curious about how they can be useful to humans. In “My Holo Love”, a hologram helps a human who suffers from face blindness.
♦ GIO Labs Presents Its Prototype AI Humanoid (Hologram)
GIO Labs deserves high praise for being the first to invent an AI humanoid that passed the Turing Test (a test that scores how well a machine can imitate a human talking). A representative for GIO Labs made an excellent presentation of the hologlass prototype; a pair of eyeglasses that will give a human access to a personal hologram of their own.
Magic Mirror wants to buy this invention but GIO Labs refuses the offer. The GIO representative was on her way home when the AI humanoid alerted her to the fact that she was being followed. Since the car had a self-driving feature, the AI humanoid took the wheel.
When it was safe, she jumped out of the car trying to get away from those who were chasing after her. She knew they were after the eyeglasses and so she dropped into the purse of an unsuspecting woman who was walking home from work. That woman was Han So-Yeon.
♦ The Accidental Beta Tester
Han So-Yeon suffers from face blindness. Her boss just thought she had poor eyesight and told her to wear eyeglasses. She found a pair of eyeglasses in her purse and didn’t know where they came from. Nevertheless, she tried them on and saw a man. When she took them off, the man disappeared. Are her eyes playing tricks on her?
At home, she tried the glasses on again. When the man appeared she thought she was seeing a ghost. It took a little convincing but “Holo”, the AI humanoid, finally convinced her that he wasn’t a ghost and that he meant her no harm. He also told her that since the prototype has not been released she should consider her use of the eyeglasses as a “beta test”.
The owner of GIO Labs and the inventor of the AI humanoid is Ko Nan-Do. It’s not a coincidence that Holo looks exactly like him. There was a tracking device in the eyeglasses so he was able to find his prototype invention. The product had not yet been released to the public and thieves were trying to get their hands on the technology. But he installed safety features to make sure that didn’t happen.
By the time Ko Nan-Do located Holo, Han So-yeon had become comfortable using the AI program in her daily life. Ko Nan-Do only wanted to retrieve his eyeglasses and return to his company. But the first encounter between So-yeon and Nan-Do was not something he could forget. Slowly their relationship starts developing and leads to love.
Main Characters:
- Han So-Yeon (played by Ko Sung-Hee)
- AI Holo / Ko Nan-Do (played by Yoon Hyun-Min )
Viewership and Rating:
- IMDb: 7.6 out of 10 stars
- MyDramaList: 8.2 out of 10 stars
- 800+ Reviews publicly shared rating via Google: 4.8 out of 5 stars
My personal rating is 9 out of 10 stars. There is a little bit of suspense since bad guys are trying to steal the invention. But overall, it’s a wonderful blend of science fiction, romance, and comedy. Even though it was not included on MovieWeb’s list of “cozy Korean shows”, “My Holo Love” fits easily into the “cozy romance” genre.
