Free League Publishing, creators of the hit Middle Earth RPG The One Ring, are about to introduce a 5E compatible variant called The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying. The final retail version of the game isn’t set to appear until 2023, and not even the date of the Kickstarter has been announced….but you can try out an early version today.
The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying will come with everything you need, including “six original heroic cultures from the land of Eriador, six new classes, a host of terrifying adversaries, and comprehensive rules for journeys, councils, wondrous artefacts, and the subtle magic of Middle-earth.” The core compendium and a scenario module entitled Shire Adventures will be open for preorders this fall.
So how can you try it now? By heading to drivethruRPG.com…they’ve just posted Early Access versions of both the core and Shire Adventures in digital PDF form. This early version will change as the game goes through further development, and said changes will auto-update to your DTRPG account. They cost $24.99 and $19.99 respectively, and may be a bit rough-draft in presentation, but it’s cool Free League is letting us take a peek so early.
The year is 2965 of the Third Age and the Shadow is returning. Rumors of strange things happening outside the borders of civilized lands are spreading and they sometimes reach the ears of individuals who recognize the sinister truth they hide. You are part of such a company of heroes seeking adventure. Restless warriors, curious scholars and wanderers, eager to seek what was lost or explore what was forgotten. Together, you are entering the Lone-lands of Eriador. It is here that the One Ring lies, a seed of the past that will one day lead the world to open war against the returning Shadow. The Enemy is moving, and smoke issues once more from Mount Doom, in the land of Mordor…
The Lord of the Rings Roleplaying will hit retail shelves in the first quarter of 2023.
