-

“Walking on Thin Ice” is a 2025 Korean drama, 12 episodes, categorized as Police Procedural, Crime, and Thriller; and streaming on KOCOWA+ (in the USA) and on Viki (in selected regions).

SUMMARY: A devoted wife and mother is undergoing severe financial hardship and makes a desperate decision to enter the dark and dangerous criminal world of illegal drug dealing.

My Life is Unraveling. I’m Desperate!

In “Walking on Thin Ice”, Kang Eun-soo is an ordinary wife and mother. She loves her hard-working husband and her teenage daughter, who is a very gifted artist. They live a modest life, and she’s content. But one day she opens mail that says their assets are being seized and will be auctioned to pay debt. DEBT?? When her husband arrives home from work, she demands an explanation. What has happened to their financial situation, AND why didn’t he tell her they were about to lose everything?

Of course, she’s angry. So angry that she left the house and didn’t come back home that night. After Kang Eun-soo calmed down, she returned home early in the morning and found her unconscious husband lying on the kitchen floor. There was something else he didn’t tell her. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  Their family’s finances had deteriorated, and on top of that, her husband’s health had deteriorated, and she was clueless. Now she’s faced with looming medical bills and a heavy debt burden. There are no friends or relatives who can lend her money, and she cannot obtain any loans.

But?? It’s the strangest thing. She found a bag of …??? … of “something” IN HER HOUSE. She’s not sure what it is, but she’s watching a news report on TV. The police were chasing a drug dealer who had a bag. The report is showing the man who was caught on a street camera, and Kang Eun-soo realizes that she has a bag that looks just like the drug dealer’s bag. Could it be his bag? Is this white stuff drugs? The report said the value of the drugs is about $200,000.

$200,000??????!!!!!!! That could pay her husband’s medical bills.

I Should Do the Right Thing. What is the Right Thing?

How did a bag of illegal drugs get inside her house????

But the more important question is: What’s she going to do with it?

She was going to take it to the police station because … that would be the right thing to do. But then life happened. The government officials came to her home and red-tagged their assets, her husband attempted suicide, and her daughter dropped out of school, saying she needed to work to help her mom pay the bills. Kang Eun-soo’s friend helped her get a cleaning job at a fancy nightclub. That’s when she overheard conversations of customers talking about buying and selling illegal drugs. There was this guy called James. The guy turned out to be her daughter’s art teacher. Small world, huh? Art teacher by day and moonlights as a drug dealer in the club scene by night. Kang Eun-soo approaches Lee Kyung, aka James, and proposes a partnership. He needs the drugs. She needs the money!

Meanwhile, Jang Tae-gu, a veteran detective heading the narcotics investigation team, is searching for the drugs too! Unfortunately, the drug dealer who had the bag died trying to get away from the police, and he did not have the bag with him at the time. But somebody’s got the drugs, and they have to sell them. Eventually, Jang Tae-gu will catch the dealers. He hopes. He’d better catch them! It’s a dangerous drug!!

Where to Watch

My personal rating is the same as the Viki audience.

Walking on Thin Ice” can easily be described with those words that we reviewers overuse: gripping and intense. You feel sympathy for what the main female lead is going through. But I could not feel empathy. Right from the start, you know she made a bad decision. Because no matter how bad things get in your life, it makes no sense to jump out of the frying pan and into the fire!

Consider this IN REAL LIFE. You’re broke! You have no money, and your debt is piled up to the sky. Yeah, but … you’re not in jail. You don’t have ruthless and heartless criminals breathing down your neck. You haven’t possibly put your loved ones in danger because of a bad decision you made. Being broke is one thing. But it’s foolish to BREAK YOURSELF!

The series is just fiction. However, the warning statement at the beginning of the K-drama is very appropriate.
