Free League released Forbidden Lands in 2018. It was a new twist on tabletop RPG conventions, focusing more on survival in an open world. You aren’t given a specific mission to save the world or slay Specified Monster X, you’re a raider simply hunting and gathering to live. This makes the game truly unpredictable, for you never know what’s around the next hill.
Now it’s even harder to know, as Free League introduces two expansions for Forbidden Lands. First is the Book of Beasts, described as “a bestiary you can play.” The book adds 28 new monsters to the game, includes legends about each monster, and introduces the option to harvest resources from slain beasts. The players’ Lore skills can be used to gain insight into a monster’s strengths and weaknesses. The Book of Beasts was written by Andreas Marklund and Erik Granström, and illustrated by Henrik Rosenborg with graphic design by Niklas Brandt.
On the same day, Forbidden Lands also introduces The Bloodmarch. This new campaign book expands the game world with a full campaign, Legacy of Horn, written by Erik Granström.
The Bloodmarch is the name given to the volcanic region west of Ravenland, accessible as the Shadowgate Pass is again opened. This ancient land of battle-ready horse riders and secretive dwarves is rapidly changing due to the demonic vegetation spreading across the land. Most see this red curse as a threat to all that is good, while others view it as a good thing – or at least a necessary evil needed to reach other goals.
The big treasure everyone’s after is a legendary set of artifacts called Horn’s Astra, said to possess the ability to stop the demonic growth (or accelerate it, whatever your pleasure is). But you’ll find a lot more in The Bloodmarch, from battles to hidden worlds.
Both the Book of Beasts and The Bloodmarch are available now on Free League’s website.
