Until now, Netflix had been making promises that The Witcher would premiere its fifth and final season sometime in 2026. With more than half of 2026 gone already, you’d think we would be seeing teasers start to appear….if it wasn’t delayed. Those who assumed so are right: the streamer announced today the show will not return anytime this year.
Given the largely negative response to Season Four — which replaced Henry Cavill with Liam Hemsworth and made a few bad story decisions — one would assume the delay is meant to tighten up the script, reshoot some things, and deliver a more satisfying ending. You would be wrong. Shooting of Season Five took place right after Season Four and that part of production is done. It’s been done ever since last September…which makes the delay kind of mystifying.
The only real thing left is post-production. Are some of those effects shots taking longer than anticipated? They’ve had a full year. Stranger Things Season 5 also took a full year to complete its VFX, but that was a more expensive, more lengthy production. Netflix probably isn’t willing to spend that much on The Witcher, especially considering its flagging numbers.
At its peak, shortly after the debut of Season Two, The Witcher was believed to be future-proof; one of Netflix’s flagship shows. It was one of the first to be given an honorary extended “N” logo and multiple spinoffs were released, some animated and some with Michelle Yeoh in ’em. But after these spinoffs turned out to be nothing special and the main series itself started to decline, fans lost interest and left.
As for when The Witcher plans to end its story NOW…no one knows the exact month, all they know is that it’s sometime in 2027. Or maybe a second delay will push it into 2028.
