Seeing that more kids today get their comic book fix from bound books instead of floppies, DC has been experimenting with YA graphic novels that put their classic characters in fresh new settings and depictions. It probably works better than putting Archie in hell, and I shouldn’t say “probably” because there is proof. The creative team of Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo have been reinventing the Teen Titans through their graphic novel series, which has reached the New York Times bestseller list.
Sadly all things must come to an end, and Garcia and Picolo have decided to wrap up their take on the Titans with the new GN Teen Titans: Together. Unlike the previous novels, which focused on one or two members of the TT, this finale efforts brings Robin, Starfire, Beast Boy, Cyborg, Raven and the people on the cover I can’t identify into one adventure.
“Teen Titans has been one of the most rewarding creative journeys of our careers,” said Garcia. “We’ve loved telling stories with these characters and watching readers connect with Raven, Beast Boy, and the rest of the Titans over the years. We grew alongside these characters, and these characters grew alongside the readers who embraced them from the very beginning.”
“This series changed my life,” added Picolo. “We’ve shared so many unforgettable moments with fans around the world, and we’re excited to celebrate this final chapter together. I see these characters as my friends. The more I draw them, the more fun it gets. Some of my favorite moments came from drawing these characters the same way I’d draw my own friends just hanging out, and Kami and I are always blown away when fans show up in cosplay inspired by those everyday looks from the books.”
But if you think they’re stopping here entirely, you’d be wrong. Garcia and Picolo have just announced their NEW series, based on the Young Justice crew, will launch with Young Justice: Kid Flash & Blue Beetle. Details like a release date and plot summary will come in the months ahead.
“As sentimental as we are about finishing the Teen Titans series, this is also just the beginning of a new chapter for Gabriel and me,” said Garcia. “At the heart of all our books is the idea of becoming who you’re meant to be while learning to embrace who you already are. We’re excited to bring that perspective to Young Justice and introduce readers to our vision of Kid Flash and Blue Beetle.”
To celebrate the launch of Teen Titans: Together, Garcia and Picolo are embarking on a nationwide book tour that begins this week in Los Angeles. Check the image below to find where the tour stops near you (if it does).
