HBO’s 90s classic Tales From The Crypt is the kind of show you assume is easy to find on streaming, but the truth is, it’s not actually there. One would assume it’d be on HBO Max, but that would be expecting HBO Max to make sense. The show just hasn’t joined the modern era…until now.
It’ll be Shudder, of all places, that gets Tales From The Crypt. This is a niche streaming service, dedicated to horror only, that not everyone gets. But Shudder is so proud to acquire the show that they commissioned a new promo, starring John Kassir reprising the voice of the Cryptkeeper. Yup, he’s still slinging out morbid puns in every sentence. And he’s barely aged a day!
Ages before Game of Thrones or The Sopranos, Tales From The Crypt was once HBO’s most popular show. It ran from 1989 to 1996 and boasted an almost SCARY lineup of A-list celebrities, like Brad Pitt, Demi Moore, Michael J. Fox, Catherine O’Hara, Christopher Reeve, Kyle MacLachlan, Joe Pantoliano, Patricia Arquette, Key Huy Quan, Ewan McGregor, Steve Buscemi, Martin Sheen, Joe Pesci, Tim Curry, and more. The lineup of guest directors was equally impressive: Robert Zemeckis, Tobe Hooper, William Friedkin, Mary Lambert, Fred Dekker, Richard Donner, and Walter Hill are just for starters. It’s basically what Amazing Stories wanted to be a few years earlier.
“Tales from the Crypt isn’t just a series—it’s a cornerstone of horror storytelling,” says Courtney Thomasma, executive vice president of AMC Global Media’s linear and streaming products. “Becoming its exclusive streaming home is both an honor and a thrill for us at Shudder. This is the kind of genre-defining, wonderfully twisted entertainment our members crave, and we’re proud to give the Crypt Keeper a place to cackle once again.”
Tales From the Crypt will arrive on Shudder on season at a time, with the first going live May 1, and the others dropping on Fridays after that through June 12.
