All signs pointed to doom for Superman And Lois, as their network heads abandoned them and neighboring worlds disintegrated around them. But what’s that in the sky? A bird? A Plane? No, it’s…a renewal! The show has been given a fourth season.
Higher-ups at WB have spoken about a desire to keep Superman And Lois alive as long as they can. James Gunn in particular said something to the effect of “I think we’ll keep that around for a couple more years.” So in that light, perhaps its renewal doesn’t come as THAT much of a shock, but what DOES is the fact that it’s not moving over to Max like we figured. Instead it’s remaining on The CW, a network that no longer has a budget for anything.
How are they going to do this? Deadline reports that the fourth season will face “major budget cuts” to reduce its cost and license fee to a level Nexstar can afford. Accomplishing this will involve “reducing the number of series-regular cast members.” We’ve seen what happens when Berlanti shows get budget cuts and it’s not pretty, especially with VFX-heavy shows like this one. We expect Superman to catch a Kryptonian disease in the season opener that takes away all his powers, while an unseen supervillain kidnaps the entire town of Smallville except for Lois and her boys. Said supervillain is literally invisible and is Tyler Hoechlin speaking in a croaky voice.
“We are thrilled to bring Superman And Lois back to The CW,” says president Brad Schwartz. “We are grateful to our partners at Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions for their continued collaboration, and we cannot wait to get started on the new season.”
The CW has also renewed All-American: Homecoming, but not Gotham Knights, who will air its final episode in a couple weeks.
