Another entry in the Steins;Gate series of visual novels is coming to home consoles, but it’s the last one you’d expect. We’ll explain why.
Steins;Gate Re:Boot is a deluxe repackaging of STEINS;GATE Octet of Shifting Space, released in 2011 for PC and only PC. It’s different from most other Steins;Gate games in that its visual style and gameplay is meant to evoke the feeling of an 8-bit Japanese PC novel, like one would see on something like the MSX. They took this beyond just limited colors or pixel art…each screen is drawn in lineart and then quickly filled out with color, just like these machines tended to draw their screens. A trailer would really help here if you’re not familiar with what I’m talking about, but Spike Chunsoft hasn’t released one yet.
The recreation goes far enough that the player is expected to direct the story via text parser commands. Example: “GO LEFT” to go left, “OPEN DOOR” to enter a room, “GET YE FLASK” to not get Ye Flask, etc. How is that supposed to work on a console, where everything is controlled via gamepad? Well, all modern systems these days support keyboards. Presumably you have one lying around.
The Steins;Gate Re:Boot Digital Deluxe Edition includes the game, a digital visual book, the digital soundtrack and footage from the “STEINS;GATE 15th LIVE – ONE WORLD -” live event (with English subtitles).
Steins;Gate Re:Boot Digital Deluxe Edition will be released October 29 for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam.
