We told you it was coming and…we were right. The original Star Trek lasted just three years (and it would’ve been just two if it hadn’t been picked up by a different network), but it founded a premise that will probably outlive all of us. Now to honor the 60th birthday of the show’s premiere in 1966, a new Blu-Ray (and also DVD) set is out and stuffed with extras.
There are three different versions of Star Trek: The Complete Original Series 60th Anniversary. All three will include the three seasons and 79 episodes of the Shatner series and nine hours of bonus features on the discs, but the DVD costs $101.99, the Blu-ray goes for a barely different $104.99, and the Amazon Exclusive Edition sells for $139.99. For that extra money, you get a 4-inch vinyl containing the show’s original theme and a set of limited-edition lobby cards.
So what’s the difference between this and the 50th Anniversary set that was released ten years ago? Price, mainly. That set cost $100 more, but it also had the first six movies and the animated series in it. If you never picked that set up, those other things are freely available individually. If you did pick the 50th Anniversary set up, this is more of a reissue than an upgrade, so keep it. Those with no Original Trek to speak of, though, can’t go wrong here.
Amazon is using the launch of the new Star Trek set to open a dedicated Star Trek TV and movie store. “Organized chronologically by production release, the store allows fans to journey through six decades of Star Trek history while discovering complete series collections, feature films, and sought-after limited-edition collector’s releases,” they say. The storefront is live now and you can access it through this link, where the 60th Anniversary Star Trek set can be ordered.
