Some excellent news came out of Microsoft‘s Summer Game Fest presentation yesterday. After a dormancy of almost a decade, Spyro the Dragon is returning to video games in an entirely new adventure, molded in the spirit of his 90s and 2000s classics yet refined for a new generation. This is…A Realm Beyond.
The announcement trailer starts with a prerendered scene of Spyro flipping and zooming high above his meadow home, intercut with shots of a new menacing villain just out of frame (he has a staff and a castle tower, we know that much). Spyro laughs with the returning voice of Tom Kenny as he zips toward the dark tower….and from there we get a brief gameplay clip showing how Spyro will handle.
Toys For Bob, who were behind the Spyro Reignired Trilogy, should know the purple scaly one better than anybody else by now. Associate creative director Louis Studdert says the world of A Realm Beyond will be open in ways Spyro’s land has never been before. “[We] amplify the fantasy of being a dragon.” he says. “Players can be roaming the environment and take to the skies at a moment’s notice.”
The refined controls of Spyro’s flight will allow players to flap his wings with button presses and use updrafts to soar higher — and this time, the game will take real-world physics into account by turning the things Spyro sets on fire into updrafts themselves. This all seems to promise a fully open-world game, but Toys For Bob would not confirm one way or the other. From the clip of gameplay we were shown, we can say if the worlds aren’t open, they are at least very large.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond will be released sometime in the spring of 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and PC.
