Split Fiction: The New Co-op Game from EA and Hazelight Studios

From the team behind the hit co-op game It Takes Two, EA and Hazelight Studios are back with Split Fiction. This new game promises a fresh, fun, and straightforward experience that feels like a much-needed change in today’s gaming world.

In a world where DLC dominates video games and no one makes complete games anymore, Split Fiction is a complete game. It skips all the nonsense, no microtransactions, no loot boxes, no weird paywalls. It’s a full game, right out of the box. In a time when most games seem to come in pieces, Split Fiction is like, “Nope, here’s the whole thing.”

If you loved the co-op magic of It Takes Two, you’ll vibe with this one. It’s got the same focus on working together, whether you’re playing with someone on the couch or online. The puzzles and challenges are all about teamwork, creativity, and maybe a little bit of friendly arguing when things get tricky (in the best way possible).

And let’s talk about one of its coolest features: Friend’s Pass. If you’ve got the game, you can invite a buddy to join you online for free, even if they don’t own it. That’s right, only one of you needs a copy. For those of us who love local gaming, it also has an offline couch co-op mode with split-screen. In a world where co-op games are mostly online-only, this feels like a total throwback, and we’re here for it.

So what’s the story? It’s about two writers, Mio and Zoe, trying to sell their ideas to a futuristic tech company. This isn’t your typical pitch meeting, though. Their stories get turned into fully immersive simulations, where instead of VR goggles, you float in a holographic bubble and feel like you’re really there. Zoe’s all in and excited to try it, but Mio? Not so much. She just wants to sell her manuscript, not live it. Things go sideways, and Mio accidentally gets pulled into Zoe’s simulation. Surprise, they’ve been scammed, and now they’re stuck inside.

Here’s the twist: the two women are total strangers and write very different genres. Mio’s a sci-fi writer, while Zoe’s all about fantasy. So, they end up exploring each other’s worlds. In Mio’s story, you’ll ride hoverboards and escape a dying Earth. In Zoey’s, you’ll raise baby dragons and fight giants. Oh, and the simulation gives them superhero-level athletic skills, so expect some wild parkour and stunts.

Another thing worth noting: Mio and Zoe’s character designs are a win. Let’s just say they’re appealing in a way that a lot of players are going to appreciate. No overthinking here, just two cool, relatable protagonists. They dont look like  the characters designed by Sweet Baby Inc.

The game’s got everything: an emotional story, amazing worlds to explore, and plenty of humor and surprises. It’s the kind of game that’s perfect for hanging out and playing with someone, whether it’s your best friend, partner, or sibling.

Split Fiction drops on March 6, 2025, for $49.99. It’s coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam, Epic Games Store, and the EA app. If you’re into co-op games that actually put the fun first, this one’s for you. Grab a buddy and get ready to dive in, this is going to be a good time!
