It’s interesting how Nintendo and Sega, despite coming from the same region of Japan, have polar opposite approaches to treating their fans. Nintendo can be very strict about fan works, striking down free games made in earnest by people just wanting to express their love for the company’s characters. Then there’s Sega, who not only fully allows Sonic fan games but will sometimes officially endorse them.
The Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog shadow-dropped (pun intended) earlier today on Steam. Sonic Team, or any other team that traditionally has to do with the ‘hog, had nothing to do with it. It’s a visual novel created entirely by Sonic’s most vocal online fans (credited as the “Sonic Social Team”), and released officially by Sega — for free.
The situation: Amy is hosting a mystery party on a train called the Mirage Express, and everybody who’s appeared in a Sonic game is invited. The mystery? The death of Sonic! One of the crew members “killed” him, but who and why? As a nameless passenger it’s your job to sift through clues, inspect the rooms, interview the others and determine if there’s actually more going on here than it seems. (Sonic’s not REALLY dead, right?)
The game came hours after this cheeky post from Sonic himself:
We've been listening. A new direction for Sonic is coming soon…

And if you’re wondering if any of this has to do with April Fool’s Day…kind of. It’s a real game, and it was released one day early, but it’s Sega’s confirmed means of celebrating this year. The Murder Of Sonic The Hedgehog is available now on Steam for free.
