SDCC 2023: DC Superheroes Focus Of “Interactive Streaming Series”

-

One of the more unusual announcements out of SDCC came from DC, who has just revealed Heroes United, something they call an “interactive streaming series.”

The series takes place on an alternate Earth (Earth-212 if you really want to know the specifics) where all the DC heroes exist, but do not know each other. Then one day the “magical Tower of Fate” appears in Gotham and brings all super-beings to it like a beacon. The story is, basically, how their Justice League was founded. But exactly HOW it’s founded…is up to you.

“For nearly a century, DC fans like me have debated what hero would win in a fight, what hero was right, or how they would lead the Justice League,” said Jacob Navok, CEO of Genvid Entertainment, the company that’s putting this together. “Now, we give you the chance to be part of every critical decision from day one, and with incredible storyline and graphical fidelity across everywhere you can watch streaming video.”

“This will be like the ‘Death in the Family’ audience decision about Jason Todd, but on a massive, global scale,” added Stephan Bugaj, chief creative officer at Genvid. “Fan decisions will determine irreversible outcomes for these classic heroes and villains as you, the audience, shape the canon of Earth-212. How this universe’s Justice League confronts problems, relates to each other, and develops into a team is up to its fans and no one knows what all the final outcomes will be, including we the creators.”

A lot of questions about DC Heroes United are being left unanswered so far. What is this? Is it like those choose-your-own-path Netflix gimmicks, or is it something deeper? Are the votes for what will happen next collective — does everybody decide at once? (That’s how “Death in the Family,” the example they threw out, worked.) And where and how will this be delivered? Will a specific streaming service host it or will it have its own app?

We don’t completely know what DC Heroes United is, but it’ll be nifty if they can pull it off, and we like the original Terry Dodson illustrations that are hyping the thing. More information on this curiosity will come as we get it.
