In 2022, the Academy Awards crowned Samuel L. Jackson with an honorary award as a “cultural icon whose dynamic work has resonated across genres and generations and audiences worldwide.”
Samuel Leroy Jackson was born in Washington, D.C. on December 21, 1948, and is the highest-grossing actor of all time. The movies in which he has appeared have grossed more than $27 billion in box office revenues.
Jackson is an American actor and producer and has appeared in tons of movies and across almost every genre, ranging from drama to superhero.
Jackson started acting at the Broadway theatre appearing in several shows and comedies. However, it was not until his appearance in the 1981 play, A Soldier’s Play, that he entered the big screen.
He was spotted by Spike Lee who gave him minor roles in many films including School Daze (1988) and Do The Right Thing (1989). One of his most notable roles was as a sit-in for Bill Cosby on The Cosby Show, which he did for three years.
Having overdosed several times on heroin consumption, he decided to try cocaine. His family reached out to him and placed him in a rehab center. When he was finally clean, he played the role of a drug addict in Jungle Fever (1991). He performed so well, that the judges at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival created a special ‘Supporting Actor’ award just for him.
Jackson now starred in his first movies. There were two outstanding comedies: National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1 and Amos & Andrew. He participated in an action thriller directed by Steven Spielberg 1993’s Jurassic Park.
In 1994, Tarantino asked Jackson to play the role of Jules Winnfield in Pulp Fiction (1994). Jackson was overwhelmed to discover that the part had been specifically written for him. He told Vogue: “To know that somebody had written something like Jules for me. I was overwhelmed, thankful, arrogant.’
His work afterward took a dive but was soon on the upturn and by 2000, he was honored with a place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 7018 Hollywood Blvd. This only propelled him to greater heights.
Three years later, he appeared in so many movies, that the band Hot Action Cop wrote and released a song in his honor. The song was entitled Sammy L. Jackson and was later used as the soundtrack for the movie Swat (2003).
On January 30, 2006, a special hand and footprint ceremony was held at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. On his honor. Jackson became the seventh African American and 191st actor to be recognized in this manner. Later in December 2006, he won the German Bambi Award for International Film, for his roles in so many films.
According to the Golden Globe, Jackson has participated in 152 films that have grossed more than $27 billion at the box office. This makes him the highest-grossing actor of all time. He is happily married to La Tanya Richardson with whom he has a daughter.
