You may best know Samara Weaving as the star of two films where she’s targeted on her wedding night by her devil-worshipping spoiled-brat in-laws. But she’ll soon land a bigger role than Grace, and a better set of weapons than a bat or a gun. Weaving has been cast by Marvel Studios as the big-screen version of the X-Men’s Emma Frost.
Emma, the “White Queen,” was introduced in 1980 in the pages of Uncanny X-Men. Her name and usually all-white attire would suggest some kind of snow-generating power (a lot of newbies makes this mistake) but Frost is actually a telepath. Not as dangerously powerful as Jean Grey, but strong enough to worry her enemies. And she has more of them than anybody else, because Emma makes enemies of everybody! Depending on the month or time of day, she’s either working with the good guys or the bad guys. Emma is on the side of Emma. She serves whoever offers the best outcome for her.
To make Emma’s name make a bit more sense, she eventually manifested the power to turn her body into diamond, making her invulnerable. Emma may not be the most trustworthy person, but her confident, smirking attitude has won her a lot of fans. Weaving should be able to nail it.
There was already an Emma Frost in the Fox X-Men continuity; she appeared in Days Of Future Past and First Class played by January Jones. No one knows when Marvel Studios will get around to making their own X-Men movie, but the cast is slowly getting filled out.
