Marvel‘s She-Hulk: Attorney At Law premiered on Disney+ in the summer of 2022. Critics loved it, but the audience response was middle of the road (it got better ratings than Secret Invasion, but didn’t become as huge as WandaVision). Even still, that would be enough for a second season…at least that’s the hope of those who enjoyed it.
Those hopes were dashed this week by star Tatiana Maslany, who was asked on a Twitch show (reported by Polygon) about the future of the series. “I don’t think so,” she said. “I think we blew our budget, and Disney was like, ‘no thanks!’” This might seem like an unexpected comment given She-Hulk didn’t seem like a “budget-busting” TV series….no invading hordes of aliens, no exploding buildings, no extensive use of CGI — oh, wait.
Jennifer Walters herself was a CGI creation; every moment she was onscreen in powered-up form, she had to be rendered. It was actually a LOT of computer work for a TV series, and it couldn’t be fully polished by show time, resulting in a lot of scenes that didn’t look very convincing (and some people sure complained).
The Marvel Multiverse TV shows have been a mixed bag so far, but this reporter thought She-Hulk was one of the better ones. Maslany was a great lead, the supporting cast was a delight (Madisynn became a meme for a while), and the comic’s fourth wall tendencies were translated faithfully. I’ve noticed the people who didn’t like She-Hulk tend to be misogynist internet trolls, the type the series directly made fun of (they can dish it out but they really can’t take it).
If I were the one in charge I would have greenlit She-Hulk Season 2 months ago, but then again, I also would have had Willow Season 2 produced and aired already.
