Nintendo Switch Online Gets Wario Land And Some Others

-

Nintendo Switch Online just updated its library for both regulat and Expansion Pack customers. The majority of new titles (well, new to you maybe) were added to Game Boy, while Game Boy Advance got one additional game.

The most significant arrival of today’s bunch is the original Wario Land, released in 1993. It was the first game to ever star Wario as the main playable character and defined what that kind of experience would be, at least for a while. Wario met pirates, put on a lot of hats and plundered treasure. Plus, he met some ducks who threw boomerangs at him. As of now, NSO is only missing Wario Land II to get the full WAH-experience. The release schedule has been odd: first 3, then 4, then the Virtual Boy one, then 1. Then maybe finally 2 in 2027 or something?

Two more Game Boy titles were also added. 1996’s Sword of Hope II is a lot like the first Sword of Hope…they are both dated tabletop-style RPGs with a lot of numbers and figures taking up most of the screen and a little window to visually represent where you are. An acquired taste to be sure. 1991’s Fortified Zone is an odd duck that combines run-and-gun shooters with the “dungeon” exploration of a Zelda game.

On the Game Boy Advance we have Dr. Mario + Puzzle League. Dr. Mario is already available on NSO in multiple forms, including Dr. Wario if you unlock it in Wario Ware: Mega Microgame$. Why not another one? It was sold in one package with what they were calling “Puzzle League” at that time. Nintendo worried Panel De Pon wouldn’t sell to American audiences due to all the flowers and fairies, so they renamed it Tetris Attack for its initial release (despite having nothing to do with Tetris) and reskinned it with Yoshi’s Island characters. On the N64 the game would be re-released, but this time as “Pokemon Puzzle League” with designs from the anime. Now the “Pokemon” has been lopped off and it’s just “Puzzle League” with a bunch of nobody characters invented for the game. The point is, the original Panel De Pon is now in the SNES library of NSO, if you ever want to experience what could’ve been.

All these games are now live on Nintendo Switch Online.
