SUMMARY: A lifelong con artist marries a cop. He is blackmailed into running for the National Assembly, turning his gift for deception into a very public performance. What will happen when his detective wife learns the truth?
In “My Fellow Citizens”, Yang Jung-Kook is a third-generation con artist. Unfortunately, the woman he loved conned him and ran off with a fortune. He was devastated because he was genuinely in love with her. So he went to a bar to get drunk.
Kim Mi-Yong is a detective who caught her boyfriend cheating. He said she might as well forgive him, because no man would want to date her anyway. Her job is dangerous, her hours are crazy, and he never knows if she’ll come home or if he’ll have to identify her dead body. What he said made sense, but his cheating was inexcusable and unforgivable.
One was conned, and the other was cheated on. By coincidence, she went to the same bar. That’s where they met. They decided to date each other and fell in love.
Yang Jung-Kook was always proud to brag, “I’m a con artist—but I’ve never been caught.”
He didn’t realize that two women in his life would change everything.
The first woman is Kim Mi-Young, the woman he met in a bar. She later became his wife, who never mentioned that she was a cop while they were dating, planning their wedding, and getting married. When they were getting ready for their honeymoon, she confessed. The only thing he wanted to know was if she had ever caught a con artist. She told him she worked in the VCU (Violent Crimes Unit). They don’t solve those types of crimes. At any rate, Yang Jung-Kook need not worry because she transferred from VCU to a desk job. He never has to worry that she’ll be in danger. It turns out she transferred to the ICI unit that investigates con artists.
The second woman is Park Hoo-Ja. She wants revenge because Yang Jung-Kook conned her father. Not that her father was a good guy. Her dad was a loan shark, and she’s carrying on with her father’s business. Nevertheless, Yang Jung-Kook should pay for conning her father. When she finally tracks down Yang Jung-Kook, she doesn’t break his arms or legs, or kill him. She sees potential. After all, he’s never been caught and has no criminal record. He’s perfect!
Yang Jung-Kook must learn how to campaign, navigate party factions, and survive televised debates. At the same time, he must hide his criminal past from voters and, most painfully, from his wife.
Kim Mi Young faces her own moral crossroads. As a detective, she’s committed to justice; as a wife, she’s committed to her marriage. But she begins to sense that something is off about her husband.
Park Hoo Ja embodies the ruthless, transactional side of power. A woman accustomed to living and working in an underworld that requires being a master manipulator. Elections and corruption are just a part of doing business.
Can a lifelong con man truly become an honest lawmaker?
My personal rating is the same as the Viki viewing audience.
“My Fellow Citizens” pokes fun at politics. It is hard NOT to enjoy this comical political satire.
