One of Free League’s longest-running RPGs, Mutant: Year Zero, is getting another expansion, the company announced today. This one, titled Ad Astra, expands the post-apocalyptic world into the stars.
Up to now, the world of Year Zero — based on the classic Swedish TTRPG Mutant first released in 1984 — has been grounded on the remains of Earth, because who would be able to access the technology to escape it? Someone must’ve figured out a way, however, because this particular subset of the Mutant world has you exploring space stations orbiting high above the planet.
Through the tiny portholes of the space capsule, you see the city hanging weightlessly beneath the stars – like a huge hanging mobile over Earth, the poisoned cradle of humanity. Drawing closer, it becomes clear that there is something wrong with this star city. You float past large holes, torn wires, and cracked satellite dishes. It seems the Apocalypse reached all the way to the heavens.
Mutant Year Zero: Ad Astra was written by Jens Alm and illustrated by award-winning comic book writer and artist Kim W. Andersson. It can be played stand-alone or as a direct continuation of the Path to Eden campaign in the Mutant: Year Zero core rulebook. It also includes rules for adapting the base Mutant Year Zero game for further adventures in space.
Preorders for Mutant Year Zero: Ad Astra are now open at the Free League webshop. All orders grant immediate early access to a full advance PDF of the book. The physical release is expected early next year, along with reprints of every previous Mutant: Year Zero volume.
