Loop Hero Puts You In Charge Of The Journey

-

Loop Hero, created by dev team Four Quarters, is Steam’s latest hit. It combines several genres we cover around here frequently…roguelites, deck-builders, RPGs, and let’s not forget things with retro graphics. All these elements are combined into an addictive pie that’s managed to sell half a million copies in one week.

There’s a hero in Loop Hero, but it’s not you. It’s the brave knight who gets up every morning and slays monsters in a looping dungeon before coming back around to their own camp and starting over the next day. However, you’re not EXACTLY watching the game play itself. You’re the Dungeon Master, in a sense…the one who must make sure that knight faces worthy challenges and nets good treasure.

The hero gathers equipment from defeated monsters. You take that equipment, compare the numbers and make sure they’re wearing the best of it. The enemies also drop cards, which are the real meat of this game — they can be used to add obstacles or heath boosts, change the loop path, and pit the hero against stronger monsters so the hero will also get stronger. In between loops, when the hero is at camp, your job is to take the remaining materials to build the camp up. A better camp means better resources, which means a better shot at finding even BETTER items, and on and on….in a loop.

No one’s more pleased with the performance of Loop Hero than its own publisher, who knew they had a hit when they saw it. “When we first encountered Loop Hero it led to a 98% drop in productivity at Devolver,” they say. “We can’t thank Four Quarters enough for giving us the opportunity to share their incredible game with the rest of the world. They fully deserve all of the praise they’ve received so far, but seriously, we can’t get any work done and may never recover from this.”

Loop Hero is available now on Steam.
