Lollipop Chainsaw RePop Revealed, Dated, Exposed

-

There’s been a big question mark hovering over Dragami Games’ remake of Lollipop Chainsaw ever since it was first announced…the biggest question being if it was even possible. Fans of the original would want the sophomoric humor untouched and uncensored. Moral crusaders who write for gaming websites would be sharpening their pencils readying to take it down. Pleasing both would be impossible. Then there was all the licensed music in the game — what would happen to that?

Lollipop Chainsaw Re-Pop was announced two years ago and it wasn’t until this evening that the lid was taken off. So what’re we getting? Well, based on the footage from the trailer, the rude sense of humor doesn’t APPEAR to be toned down — we can’t hear anyone say anything, but Juliet’s still wearing the same outfit. However, there will be a “RePop Mode,” which covers up some of the more gory acts of violence with pop-art effects. The footage in the trailer is from the RePop mode. You can have the original blood if you want it.

It looks like this is more of a remaster than a revamp — graphics and character models are pretty much the same. But the developers say the new version has an improved camera, increased attack and movement speeds, shorter load times, and 4K support when you’re not using the Switch version. The Chainsaw Blaster has an auto-fire mode with an increased amount of ammo, and combo actions will be allowed from the beginning of the game.

As for the licensed music….sorry, it’s all gone. We warned you it would happen. Dragami will be substituting original songs in its place. We’ll miss you, Toni Basil.

Lollipop Chainsaw was the product of a collaboration between two minds, one of whom won’t surprise you and one of whom will: No More Heroes creator Suda51 and future DC Cinematic Universe president James Gunn. The game’s main character, Juliet Starling, comes from a family of zombie slayers and has now officially come of age — just in time for an army of the undead to charge into her school and take over everything. Using her wits, acrobatics and heart-themed chainsaw, Juliet must defeat the ringleaders of the horde.

Some questions still remain, and we may have to wait until we get the game in our hands for answers. (Said hand-holding will be possible — a physical edition is now confirmed.) Lollipop Chainsaw RePop is coming out September 25 for Playstation 5, XBox Series X, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam.
