Barbenheimer was the kind of rare phenomenon that’s impossible to duplicate, not that it will stop anyone from trying. As usual, Hollywood learns the wrong lessons, ignoring the obvious (“people want more Greta Gerwig movies”) and focusing on the superficial (“people want more toy movies”). You can’t force a meme either, so any sincere attempt at combining the promotion for two movies in the future will also fail.
But then there’s Full Moon Features, the schlock kings behind the Puppet Master series. They know a thing or two about dolls….and bombs. So they looked at the Variety headlines and said “if the word Barbenheimer is on everybody’s lips, let’s just literally make a movie called that.”
At least they did their homework. The description of the actual Barbenheimer movie sounds exactly like the plots of both films stitched together: “Deep within Dollsville, a group of fed-up female dolls – led by the brilliant Dr. Barbenheimer – build an atomic bomb. Their mission? To bring down the patriarchy once and for all! But as the battle of the sexes swells, will Barbenheimer and her bevy of beauties end up blowing up more than they bargained for?”
Full Moon does not have a single frame of this movie filmed yet; they plan to crank it out in October and have it available by December. But think of the time viewers can save by watching Barbenheimer instead of Barbie and Oppenheimer back to back. And months from now, when the Oscar committee is debating which of the two films to focus on, there will be a simple solution: give all the awards to this one instead. It’s genius, I tell you, genius.
All we have right now though is the poster. There’s a slight possibility Mattel won’t like this and stop the film from happening with a lawsuit, but we have yet to hear from them.
