“The Kidnapping Day” begins with a scene in a hospital. It’s a day like any other day at a hospital. Lots of patients, people accompanying patients, doctors, and other medical staff. A doctor is there with his young daughter. Suddenly a man comes up from behind to attack him. The man failed and people were able to subdue him.
But the man is determined. He breaks free, picks up a scalpel a nurse had dropped on the floor during the commotion, and goes after the doctor again. This time he succeeds in attacking. The doctor looks at the face of his daughter who is frightened, in shock, and injured.
The scene changes and the kidnapper, a man named Kim Myeong-Jun, is on the phone talking to someone who is his partner in crime. She convinced him that the “job” would be simple. Most importantly, nobody is supposed to get seriously hurt.
Why would the kidnapper want to hurt anyone? After all, he has a daughter. The only reason he agreed to the kidnapping was because he needed money to pay for her medical bills and surgery. He agreed to kidnap Choi Ro-hee, the doctor’s daughter, collect the ransom, and return the child. Only that’s not what happened.
The kidnapper is unable to reach the parents so he goes by their home to observe the situation. When he arrives, he sees two (2) dead bodies being carried out. The girl’s parents have been murdered. He’s confused. That wasn’t the plan.
Things have escalated from a kidnapping to a double murder and a kidnapping. The kidnapper contacts his partner and she claims she doesn’t know what’s going on either.
The kidnapper is confused and the police are equally baffled.
It is not difficult for the kidnapper to control his kidnapped victim. She has lost her memory and believes the kidnapper is her father. But he can’t continue to deceive the young girl, so he makes a decision.
He contacts his partner and tells her that he will return to the girl safely, confess to the crime of kidnapping, and not incriminate anyone else. But before he does this he will visit the hospital to see his sick daughter one last time. OK. Sounds like a good revised plan.
However, while he was out trying to get details about the parents, someone broke into the place where he was staying with the girl and tried to kidnap her again!
The girl has survival instincts and manages to escape. The kidnapper arrived back just in time to rescue her from … “the other kidnapper”. (???) Why is there another kidnapper?
Choi Ro-hee starts to regain bits and pieces of her memory. She realizes that she is not the kidnapper’s daughter, but does not think he is a bad person. She convinces him to tell her who he is and why he kidnapped her.
The story about Kim Myeong-Jun’s sick daughter makes her sympathetic. Still! Can’t he let her go home? She promises not to tell anyone about him. So he takes her to the police station. The plan is to give him time to get away and she will tell the police who she is so they can take her home.
But Choi Ro-hee suddenly remembers something about her home and a police car. It’s a troubling and even scary memory. A memory that makes her think that the police can not be trusted. She changes her mind and instead tells the police that she has lost her father, and needs help finding him.
The policeman helps her reunite with the kidnapper, who she is now referring to as “father”. The kidnapper is confused again! That wasn’t the plan! Why do the plans keep changing?
She confides in him about her fears of the police. If her parents are wealthy and crooked police are involved, then they are probably both in danger. He might have been duped into kidnapping her for his own daughter’s sake. But there is something that the kidnapper was not told.
But if they can’t trust the police, who can they trust? How can she be returned safely? From that point, the kidnapper, Kim Myeong-Jun, and the kidnapped, Choi Ro-hee, start working together to avoid the police AND to save themselves.
Is there a plan that will work?
My personal rating is the same as the Amazon Prime Video viewers. This K-drama series has gotten a lot of buzz and it’s understandable. I loved the chemistry between the kidnapper and the kidnapped. Their relationship seemed even closer than a father and daughter. They made a great team.
